eCommerce Website

I have no intentions of leaving Etsy, but I do want to build my own eCommerce website. I have been researching and honestly there are way too many options! I know what I am looking for but I have noticed that unless there is a free trial you really do not know if they have all the perks you are looking for.

Does anyone have their own eCommerce site and what do you use?
Wordpress
Shopify
Bigcommerce
Dreamweaver etc...

Elizabeth,

Does it give you an option for check out or is it an extra service you need to find on your own?

Re: eCommerce Website

I used self-hosted WordPress for mine... if you have a decent understanding of the blogging platforms, it's really nice. It has a bit more of a learning curve than just using something like BigCommerce, but it is very robust, and you won't pay a monthly fee to host your products. You just pay for your overall web hosting. Most WP shopping cart plugins are free, so it's easy to test them out. I paid $50 for mine, but it was a one-time fee. Regardless of what you do, buy your domain name and point it to your ecommerce site -- so that if you ever do need to move or expand, you won't have to change your address/ biz cards/ etc.

Currently working on building my eCommerce site with Shopify. It's a little pricey, but I think it's a good platform and am liking the available options for configuring my site.

Re: eCommerce Website

Oh good Patricia, I'm glad to see someone who is working with Shopify. I'm considering it but have been searching for others who are using it as well.

Re: eCommerce Website

This is really helpful. I've considered just trying out one of the sites like Big Commerce, but my main hesitation is would any of these work for made to order items? I'm really not experienced in this area at all.

Re: eCommerce Website

I bought my domain from GoDaddy and am using Adobe Muse to build the site. Currently, I have it set up with a link to my shop here on Etsy for customers to purchase from me, but I will eventually have it set up completely separate from Etsy at which point it will cost more than it does now to have the ecommerce part of it. Honestly, GoDaddy is one of the best sites to work with. They have outstanding 24/7 AMERICAN customer support, and they don't have to transfer you around the room to get answers. They really know what they're doing, and can walk you through anything you want to do. I can't speak highly enough about their support, which is also available online through a chat, and you can find almost any answer you need in their online forums too. Price wise, they've got some of the best prices around, and they constantly have sales and extra bonuses going too.

Re: eCommerce Website

I am thinking of creating my own e-commerce website to back up my Etsy store but wish to read more about others' experiences before deciding on it.

Re: eCommerce Website

Any thoughts on how/if selling made to order items would work on your own website?

Re: eCommerce Website

I know Shopify is the number 1 but it is a bit pricey. I have heard good things about Wordpress and these other websites. Do either of these have options for integrating a coupon code and signing up for your own login info as a customer.

I ca do html I just know some websites are not so easy to manipulate.

Re: eCommerce Website

I have my own ecommerce site and I use 3dcart. I'm really happy with it. It's less investment than shopify. They don't take a percentage and the levels are a bit cheaper.
