Things are tough when your category has 2,000,000 items, and you have 40.
You must do everything possible to give yourself a chance to be found. I dont see that in threads compalining about low views.
And, it isnt that hard, nor does it take much time to have good tags and titles. Ignore all that constant "tweaking" noise you read about. Do it right the first time, and you can spend the tweaking time making things.

I have learned the following from the Queen of SEO:

1.Your title is not the name of your item. It is a 70 character string whose goal is to get your item found by etsy search.

2. If you cant tell exactly what the item is by reading your tags, your tags stink. Those words are what people search on. If I had a dime for every purple necklace that had neither purple nor necklace in the tags, I would have a lot of dimes.

3. Words in your title must show up in your tags. If Blue scarf is in your title, blue scarf needs to be in your tags.

4. Use as many of the 20 characters in your tags as possible. Blue scarf as one tag is better than blue, then scarf as two tags.

5.Read about SEO at cindys seo group. she is very wise. http://www.etsy.com/teams/10713/cindylouwho-team/discuss/10196168/

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

I love all of the advice. It is so great supporting each other.

How is my shop? I work on it everyday for 3-4 hours daily.

I have only had 1 order.

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Great advice Alex! My only disagreement is with your example "purple bracelet". There are over 69,000 items in that search. With that many items my pure bracelet will never get seen. Because of that I dont always use colors in my descriptions which doesn't seem right, but I don't want to waste my precious title space on keywords that won't get me found. So then it becomes a game of which keywords are broad enough to be frequently searched, but not so broad that items will be buried.

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

this thread is almost two years old.

I was just a few months in to trying to figure out how things worked on etsy back then. I think I had 400 sales at the time.

I have come a very long way since then. Almost everything now has sharp edges. Back then, the edges wee blurry.

Purple bracelet. That big scary number next to it is lying about its size.

The only number you need to know is how many relevant items are in a search. They dont tell you that. You have to dig it up on your own.
The number of relevant listings for purple bracelet is less than 1,200.

The rest dont matter.

Also,,,,,

If you want to know how search works, the best way is to do critiques on other peoples listings. Yuo can learn all you need to know and then some by just looking at search results.
And, prepare to be wrong a lot.

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Alex, how did you get the number 1200 for relevant listings? I would love to know how to figure that out!

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Amy - because near the top of page 28 of that search is where you stop finding "purple bracelet" exactly in the title and in a single tag. So 27 full pages of 45 listings is 1215 listings that are relevant.

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Hopefully a Resurrection is in progress here... LOVE all of the advice, and I am learning a lot!

I am a bit stumped, however... when one offers basically just a few categorical items, but all styled differently with diff colors - how do you create key words without being repetitious and appearing to the Search Engines as the same old page over and over - thus getting ignored?

I did the noun and adjective exersize -( wonderful is what that was! Brilliant! )

and although the nouns - all 4 of them - came easy - the adjectives left me wanting.... :(

I am just not sure how to handle this... any advice for a newbie?

Thank You, Thank You in advance!

Hi Alex,

Fantastic Advice!! I recently joined Etsy and would love it if you could take a peak at my shop. I feel like I struggle with the Title of the product and the Tags.

Thanks so much :)

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

THANK YOU! I've been trying to find the right tags for the past week, changing them and then changing them back... over and over. I came to the team page tonight to ask a question: Do I need to repeat words in the title with tags? You answered it for me. :)

I do have one question for you - You said that rather than tag "blue" and "scarf" I should do "blue scarf". Does the person searching need to type both words in order into the search bar for the tag to work, or could they type something like "blue crocheted scarf" and still have my "blue scarf" tag work?

I really appreciate that you too the time to write up this post. It is extremely helpful to me and very timely!

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

I can 100% say that blue scarf will work for blue crocheted scarf, as long as they do not use quotes to search for it. I had a similar situation happen with one of my items. They were looking up "the flame alchemist" who is a popular anime character and they found my Alchemical Fire Pendant. Unless they use quotes, it will cherry pick words from all your tags. Unfortunately I'm not sure if Etsy even changes anything when quotes are used in search, so I can't tell you what that does. I hope this helped though.

Be sure you mention crochet somewhere in your tags if you haven't already. Crochet accessory, maybe. :) Good luck!

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Are these tips mostly for Google search? Many of us get the majority of our views in Etsy search and are preferring tips on getting found there. I know there is totally different criteria for the two.

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Alex, this is a wonderful thread. Lots of good advice for a fairly new shop that has only one sale so far. I would love to know specifically what I could improve so I can get more people to see my jewelry. I have always had success with in person sales and am stumped as to why that isn't the case here.
Thank you!

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Hello guys,
I am new to this group and although I have my shop for a few years already, I can count myself as a newbie here, as I have started to look at it more closely not so much time ago.
I would be grateful if someone could have a look at my shop and tell what needs improvement, as I think I got overwhelmed with this whole SEO thing and to this point I do not see what else is wrong there.

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Hi Alex,

any advice would be great as I am a little fish in a huge category, could you suggest how I might format my item title without making it just a string of words?
