What would you type into search?

If you were searching for jewelry that is not feminine, but isn't necessarily for men, what would you type into search? Would you type in unisex? Or something else?

And do you think the term unisex is used to describe a style for women who like non-feminine jewelry, or is it only used to say an item can be worn by men or women?

I'm trying to think of what would be non-feminine jewelry. Leather cuffs? Can you post a couple listings we can work from?

Re: What would you type into search?

The items I have in mind are larger chainmaille bracelets that are in more masculine colors and have a masculine feel. I can't think of a word besides masculine which is why I posted here for help. :-P

Unfortunately I don't have most of them listed or even photographed yet. Here is the only one I have listed that would be an example.

Re: What would you type into search?

These are some words that come to mind. Hopefully this helps w your tags. Also might help to have variations of the word "chainmaille" (chain mail, chainmail).

Steampunk, industrial, statement jewelry, unisex, chunky, chain link, stainless steel, goth, Byzantine, cuff

Re: What would you type into search?

From looking at similar items from other sellers, the word unisex is widely used.

Re: What would you type into search?

I think i'd use 'chunky' as an adjective in a search.

Re: What would you type into search?

If you are saying the jewelry is "unisex" which I think it is. I would also have to go with "men's jewelry". If a man is doing the search, I think that is what they would search for, something for Men. While woman would just go with - jewelry, bracelet, earrings, etc. Also, - Mens silver chain, or whatever color you would use to describe them. You are trying to attract both genders, so use both in your tags and title.

Re: What would you type into search?

I agree, I think those examples could be unisex, and it wouldn't hurt to tag and title them for men as well as women.

Other ideas (use them in tandem with other words like bracelet or jewelry): modern, contemporary , oversized, statement, fashion jewelry, metal, chain, unique, casual, big/large, unisex, chunky

Re: What would you type into search?

Amy, if you scroll down to the bottom of your listing, Etsy gives examples "related to this listing" where you might get more ideas as well.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/151580328/red-pottery-bracelet-washer-bracelet?ref=teams_post

For example, for this one, I might write on the title:
Red Pottery Metal Bracelet - Chunky Modern Bracelet - Edgy Unisex Jewelry - Teenager Fashion Jewelry - Statement Bracelet - Unique Casual

Then, of course, repeat those phrases in your tags.

Re: What would you type into search?

Thanks for the ideas everyone! Some of them I use and some I don't, so I'll have to try some of them.

I will definitely use men's jewelry for the ones that could actually be men's jewelry. I'm not sure if my examples qualify, with the exception of the black and stainless chainmaille bracelet.

I feel like there is still an adjective besides unisex to describe non-feminine jewelry for women, but I can't put my finger on it. Maybe unisex is going to be the best keyword for that.

Oh, and Mary, are you talking about clicking on my tags at the bottom of the page to see Etsy's examples of similar items?

Re: What would you type into search?

My wife, of Plucky Kid, asserts unisex is
"Something that doesn't look good on either men or women."
I'll mention that she has high standards.
I recently ordered a neck chain for myself and was lucky the Etsy person was so friendly, because it put me to embarrassment a bit. The word "unisex" has left me guessing for decades andmakes me uneasy, heh.
You might consider "macho." I don't like it myself but a lot of men do.

Do you have the list of top Etsy search terms? I just scanned top 500 and "brass cuff" and "armband" ranked near 425.

Here's the link. If this is new to you, I'll settle for a treasury entry one day €8-l

Re: What would you type into search?

Hmm, that is interesting Ben, regarding yours and your wife's views about unisex.

I have not seen a list of the top Etsy search terms. Did you make the list? Thank you very much for posting the link.

I don't think I'm allowed to post the link, but you have your treasury entry along with a couple of others who have helped me from the teams. :D

Re: What would you type into search?

If I were looking for a bracelet such as the ones you have shown, Amy, I'd be searching under 'silver chain bracelet' (I know it's not silver but the colour is so that's what I'd still look under). Hope this helps :)

Re: What would you type into search?

I can understand where Ben's wife is coming from. When I see something is unisex, I immediately steer clear of it. To me, it means that it's usually boring and doesn't look great on anyone. If I were looking for your bracelets, I would search "chunky bracelet".

Re: What would you type into search?

Jessica, that's interesting. I'm thinking though that people who like my unisex type jewelry wouldn't be the ones who steer clear of the word unisex. But then I've only had one view from a search with unisex in it, so maybe I'm wrong. I have used chunky bracelet, but I think I will use it more. Thank you!

Thank you Kristin and Georgia! I use rocker, but interestingly I really only got views from that during the holidays and now nothing. I think it's a good description, but I don't think people type the term in very much. Which is disappointing because I thought it was a good description for a lot of my items. I'll have to try goth more, I do get views from that once in awhile.

I'm getting frustrated because I have been trying out lots of different keywords, but I'm not getting any views from the new keywords. And I check to make sure I'm showing up in the first few pages for the keywords and I am. But I just get views from the same keywords day after day. Which is good, but I'm trying to get my views up from an average of 40 a day.
