What is the best way to organize your front page?

Should the first page of your shop be a varied selection of all your products or does it seem clearer and give more impact to the visitor if all of one type of item is on the first page and then maybe all of another on the next page?

I sell quilts and patterns but I was thinking for the holidays just having all of one type of quilt on the front page. It seems that the simpler the message the more successful the shop. I'd love to hear your opinions.

I show a variety but try to keep it simple and non cluttered looking. So I try and have rows of products. Organising by colour can also look really good.

I try to organize my first page but I finally gave up on it after the first week that the tool was introduced for the simple reason that it was driving me crazy.

So now I simply ensure that my featured items are changed often.

The rest of my shop is organized by type every couple of weeks or when I get the time to do it.

Each listing has a back link within it to every other related item so its still extremely easy for my customers to find what they are looking for.

well the way you organize your FP depends on what you sell
my FP is organized by rows, one row consisting of 4 items from one section.
another method is to mix different items but organise them by color (which is something i cannot do as all my items are multicolor...)

Hi Jamie,

At the moment I have mostly Halloween items (black, orange, green etc) on my front page, with a few Christmassy ones just to give some colour variation and a change of pace.

At the start of November I change it all to Christmas items and gifts - again with mostly traditional Christmas colours. After that I'll go back to creating a colour co-ordinated front page, changing it around at least once a month but probably more frequently. Seems to work okay but I'm interested to hear what others do. :)

I have gone by seasonal items in the past. I've also done color themes. Now I'm organizing by item. I choose the same item for each line and rotate accordingly. It seems to be working but who really knows?

I have decided to go random for the moment but have started doing Christmas colors. Still debating if I should have two shops to have more cohesion. Crochetgirl, what is this organizing tool you say Etsy came out with? Would love to see what it is and how it works.

I think she means "sections" (when you list an item, it asks you what section you want it to be in, so if the customer is looking for scarves, they don't get mittens - unless you have all of your handwork together).

Thanks MerlinMN, This helps a lot! I do know about sections, and I do have them. Would have loved to have a tool that makes rearranging my shop easier than the one available right now. Maybe one day...

I had all Halloween on my front page for awhile. It's still about 95% Halloween. I like to renew several items each day and since all of my Halloween items fit on my front page now, I don't see a lot of sense in renewing items which are easily seen, so I've started renewing other things too ... and not rearranging them back into my shop. I hope to get some xmas items added soon (!) and will keep them on the front page or, more importantly (I think), move Halloween to the back, even if it means there's Americana on the front page for awhile.

I try to keep the colors harmonious while introducing relevant listings for time period. Hope that helps. :)

I have 3 brands in my shop, and they really could be separated into 3 shops, but I like having an eclectic look. The way I tie it all together is by color and subject, which I'm not sure is the best way to go, but it works for now. I've read again and again that you should keep your best sellers on the front page and / or featured. But, I get a little tired of seeing the same best sellers there all the time (my best sellers haven't changed in years - they're TRULY best sellers), so I keep those somewhere on the front page and mix in seasonal items.

I try to organize it every now and then, mostly just based on what's getting most views and what images look best together. Also, it's a good idea to keep rotating your featured items. Something I need to do more often! :)
