What is a logo used for?

I had my banners and cards produced by a graphic designer, here on Etsy, and she's suggesting I get a logo. Where is a logo used? What are the benefits? Do I really need one?

So many questions.

Re: What is a logo used for?

A logo makes sense for continuity. Imagine the same cool-looking ditty on your banner, business cards, or tags - even the banner for your booth at a craft fair. I have one that I had made into a stamp, and I end up stamping it on notecards and tissue to make everything go together. That said, it's totally up to you. It sounds like you already have a cohesive look. Simply having your shop name written in a unique and reproduce-able way would function the same, I think... A logo would just make your work that much more memorable!

I just peeked at your shop - your banner is gorgeous! I think the left side with 'Mud Pups' could work as a logo itself. :)

Re: What is a logo used for?

A logo is about branding your business. What do you see in your mind when you think of Apple, Nike, Coca-Cola, Google and even Etsy. They all have strong logos that conjure a mental picture of the brand. You can use it for everything...business cards, facebook page, advertising sheets, enclosure cards...anything you do can incorporate your logo.

I also appreciate having it as a starting point for all of the graphics associated with my shop. It makes it so much easier than starting from scratch when I'm laying out advertising pieces, especially for print advertising.

Thanks Laura and Katrina, after reading this and doing some more research it makes much more sense, to the point where now i'm thinking - why didn't I get that?! duh.
