What is StumbleUpon?

I read about 'stumbleupon' in another discussion, does anyone know what it is??

I recommend it - it works (I see it in my Shop Stats daily). Word to the wise: stumble a VARIETY of things everyday. Do not stumble just your own items. Space out the stumbling of your items on a daily basis interspersed with other things that interest you. If you do that, Stumble Upon will send *wonderful traffic* your way.

How do you stumble upon your own shop?

Click on the thumbs up "I like it" tab on your item, fill in the window (tags & review - don't skip the review) and you're done!

I love Stumbleupon, I find so many cool things.

ElleSee, to answer your question, you need to set up your account and log in, then you can submit your page, shop, whatever by "liking" it. You add a description so others can find it. Best to stumble more than just your own stuff though. Not very polite to only share your own stuff.

In fact, you may not want to use the same username there. Some people get VERY touchy about people who submit their own work to SU, if they don't think it's up to snuff. The number of likes/dislikes your page has will have a big impact on how many views it gets.

That said, it can be a great marketing tool if used properly. Plus, it's just a fun add-on to have. I have wasted many, many nights just stumbling around the internet.

Wait a minute. Did you say that the I like it button sends it to stumbled upon? When I push it it sends it to my facebook page. Does it do both?

No, There must be a Stumble button under or above the facebook and twitter buttons, but I don't know why I don't have it... what should I do?

I registered with stumbled upon before we left for dinner and put in a few sites I had bookmarked that I like - didn't add any friends or anything, and put in one of my listings on my favorites. I just checked my etsy stats and I have 2 views from stumbled upon - works for me!

StumbleUpon has a toolbar you can add that has its own thumbs up or thumbs down like button. It has nothing to to with FB or Twitter. You can install the toolbar and click the Stumble button to find new stuff based on what you tell it you like, or just leave it wide open and see what you find. You have the ability to control what types of sites you stumble, the more info you give it the more specific it gets.

How can you like an item or a page on Etsy?

Click the 'like' button on the toolbar, and it should ask you to fill out a short form, if the page hasn't already been submitted.

Also, one thing I forgot to mention is reviewing other pages. It's not necessary, but if you decide to, know that other users can flag your comments, both negatively and positively. Too many negative flags (such as profane, spammer, or unhelpful) will have an impact on how the system weights your reviews.

It's pretty complicated on the server side, but not too much to stress over. Just try to submit a variety of sites, and write fair, helpful reviews!

I've figured it out! Go to "your favorites" on stumbleupon. At the top right-hand corner there is a little blue button that says "add a site" (you should be able to see it next to your profile photo). Click on that button. It will ask you to enter the URL and a review. Then click "add a site >" at the bottom left, just below the "review" box, and you're golden! Hope that helps!

signed up - no blue button in the top right hand corner - so we'll be watching the video sometime later today. I read though that you are not supposed to promote your own goods - just others - unless you buy a commercial version.

Getting very confused about this entire marketing concept from SEOs to facebook, blog, etc.

I have been using Stumbleupon for years now, I would suggest playing with it for a while before you start to submit your own stuff. Learn how it works, and then don't bombard Stumble with your own stuff. There are some amazing things out there that I have found. Lots to learn and see.

The Stumble toolbar has a facebook icon on it, different from the thumbs up "I like it" tab. You must stumble a variety of things everyday - or they won't send any traffic your way. I have discovered so many NICE things while stumbling - you'll be surprised! Enjoy!
