What gets me to click on your item?

I have been really paying attention, when I am surfing items, as to how and why I click on certain things and ignore others. What I have realized is a main factor is the size of the picture. When I am looking though the hundreds of pics I have found I tend to skim over items if I can't see the whole item in the picture. And I have noticed that a lot of people try to get the details in the main pic and when it shows up on the listings search you can only see part of the item. If I can see the whole item I will click on it and look at the other pics for details.
I have gone back and redone my pics to make sure the whole item is visible in the first pic. It seems to have picked up my traffic.
Anyone else have the same feelings or different?

If I post my brightly colored first treasury here, how many clicks will I get?

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

Most of the whole item + "not much else".

Meaning, the thumbnail that buyers see when browsing search results or categories is so small - don't waste precious real estate with clutter around the item, or blank space.

For earrings, often my first shot thumbnail excludes the earwire, focusing on the main gems part - so you get 80% of the item. For necklaces, pendants, I focus on the drop/bib/gem part also, rather than a far-away shot of the whole necklace - that's inside the listing. So I think there are exceptions.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I click on photos that attract my eye. Sometimes it's a shot that doesn't show the whole item. Sometimes there's a unique detail on the item that wouldn't be as obvious if shown the whole product first. So no, not seeing the whole item in the first photo is not a deterrent for me.

AeridesDesigns, you are right! There are exceptions and the way you do your photos of jewelry is beautiful. There are always excptions to every rule.

Vagabond I also agree that there are times when a certain detail is all you need in a photo.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

And I tend not to click on items that have long jumbled titles. I like interesting pictures and short, clear titles.

Hmmm, I wonder what that says about me? Probably not anything good so I'm gonna stop thinking about it.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I always look at pics that have great lighting. And I notice myself replacing items in a treasury as I am making them if I run across similar items but the second one has a better, brighter picture even though the first item may be cuter.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I look at pictures that have good lighting, that are clear and have more than one view(in most cases). I also am attracted to certain colors.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I'm attracted to good photography, composition is huge. I see alot of distracting backrounds. Your product needs to be the only focal point, no competition, or confusion on what your selling. Oh, and make sure your watermark is not covering the image.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I click on items that show interesting composition, it does not need to be showing the entire item.

my items vary, for my aceos, i generally have the entire item i the 1st pic but other paintings i will show the main focus as pic 1

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I have been trying to figure out how to get the whole item to fit in the thumbnail photo. If anyone can help me figure this out, I would greatly appreciate it! I think it looks more professional.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I always browse by picture first, title second, and I've noticed that the thumbnails tend to be a little dim for some reason. So bright, clear colors, and pictures where the item fills the frame are more important to me than seeing the entire item.

I absolutely agree that distracting backgrounds are a huge turn-off though. Those thumbnail photos are small enough without something besides the product vying for my attention.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I agree. Cropping is so easy. I wonder why some people don't do it. I like to play around sometimes with off-center shots. I rather like them. I think/hope they stand out because they are different.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I usually click on close-ups over full views. I think most full views are boring, and I will skip them unless the item is really cute or something. Besides, it's difficult to see if it'll be something I want in full view since the details tend to disappear.

You can get some creative full-views depending on what you have though.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I think the first photo must be interesting enough to attract attention, either a photo that shows the whole thing or just part of it, (an interesting part of it), I think both will work, just need to get viewer's curiosity out.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

Lipstick, your photos actually look pretty good. They show the details that will draw someone in.
There are exceptions to every rule and I didnt' mean that every single photo should be a full shot. Some items like clothing and jewelry look great with the photo of the details to draw someone in.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

You are so so right. Thats how I shop. I like to see clear concise pictures and not a lot of fluff, just the item. I'll be taking a bunch of new photos....

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

I click on things that catch my eye, like color, and especially good lighting. If it's a dark picture, I don't bother.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

Great, clear pictures whether they are a close up shot or of the whole item. I tend to steer away from photos that are too dark.

Re: What gets me to click on your item?

photography is I think, the biggest draw to get someone to click. I use natural light, but that's tough with rainy weather ;)
