What does everyone think about labels?

Hi,

I would love some opinions on whether it is a good idea to invest in labels for my items.

Do you think buyers prefer non branded things when they are handmade?

Or should I invest and put my label/brand out there?

I am only a very small fish in the ocean but considering labeling to get more 'exposure'.

Any thought are welcome.

Many thanks,

Jo

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

First things first....your bibs are AMAZING! If only my 4 were still tiny. :/

I questioned the same thing then decided to do hanging tags. That way, I can sell to buyers without any hassle (they can chose to keep it or get rid of it) as well as sell here on Etsy and have my items carry my brand.

Just a thought. All my best!

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

As a buyer and seller I personally don't mind either way. Some things I've bought had hanging tags that I can remove, and some have labels sewn onto the item. I really don't mind at all. In fact I put labels on my wood blocks and on the plastic packaging of my prints. I've seen others do it as well, so I think you are fine which ever way you go.

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

Hi Jo,

A little sew in label is a great idea :)

I get mine from Cash's - they're speedy and can do small quantities e.g I order mine in batches of 36 so that I can have different coloured labels for my hats. Their Australian headquartes are in Victoria. Looks like the Australian website is getting an upgrade (http://www.cashs.com.au) - so perhaps give them a call (03) 9285 2100.

All the best!
Bettina

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

Just saw the thread about swing tags - great idea.

If you went with these you could include info like care instructions, a link to your shop etc...

BOTH! Jo do both :) hehe

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

Thanks Bettina. I will call them on Monday and get some prices. If they are not too expensive I might go ahead.

Your shop is beautiful.

Thanks mfauss, as a buyer I am the same as you that is why I'm torn.

Thanks Ecoshag, I think swing tags will be the way to go. Thinking out load - I could make myself for little cost.

Great insights all.

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

You can actually make your own hang tags with some cardstock. On one side you can do your logo and on the other side you can put care instructions. I do my logo on one side with website and email info.

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

Any items intended for children and babies must have permanent labels attached, with very specific information included, due to CPSIA regulations. Check out this Etsy team for info: http://www.etsy.com/teams/6861/keeping-up-with-cpsia?ref=pr_teams

As far as brand tags go, I don't think most people mind having a tag on a handmade item (my tags say "Handmade" on them, among other things), and another thing to think about is that, if they want to buy from you again, or if a friend asks where they got that adorable bib, they'll probably look for a tag to remember your shop name. If all they can remember is "I got it on Etsy," it's not as likely to give you repeat/referral business.

So, yes! Tags and labels are a good idea!

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

I think that tags and labels are not just a good idea - they're a great idea! It helps get your information out to other potential customers and they will know where they can buy your great baby items.

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

I think either way is fine, although tags do have the benefit of reminding people of where the item came from and where to get more. A great source of advertisement. I currently do not have tags for my items, but I am certainly not opposed to them.

Could someone post the link to the thread about swing tags here - I couldn't seem to find it.

Thanks!! :)

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

I have woven tags with my name and website and I sew them into all my pieces so one can always figure out where it came from. I also think it adds a professional touch to the piece.

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

Hi landlocked,

thank you for opening my eyes to cpsia. I had no idea this existed. Going to have to do some research.

I do however take great care in making things that are safe for children. (am a mother of two). Completely understand the risks.

Thanks to all who have responded to this post. Definatley going ahead with tags and labels as soon as I get some more sales on the board and $$ in the bank.

Thanks again.

Re: What does everyone think about labels?

Hi,

I think your products are very original and you definitely need tags or labels. If you want to have a brand, people to recognize you and build a strong and big customer base labeling is important.

In business branding is an essential part of bringing more value to the customer. Of course one can not rely on labels exclusively, how you deliver your product and customer service matter as much. But just to illustrate why I think labels are important:

Imagine two moms sitting in the park have bought bibs from you. One of them sees that the style of the bibs resemble each other but still wonders if they are bought from the same shop. When she sees the tag or label she may be sure, then the two customers will probably discuss their purchase and so on and so on...your brand becomes more popular.

I hope all of this makes sense :) Good luck with sales and branding!!!
