Its my birthday today...I am like a child so excited because for my birthday my hubby got me a lighting kit! OMG! This means that even on grey winter days like today i should still have bright photos...It also means that i can now use my sons cot as a prop (his room was too dark before) So you can all guess what im going to be doing for the next few days! Anyone have any tips or ideas on how to get the best out of these kits?
Happy Birthday Frey! I just got a light box from my son, I'm no expert on them but he told me I would probably need a light in the back. It came with two lights but a third would be great, or maybe they are just to small. Anyway look forward to some great picture displays from you. I would like to get a white back drop to see the difference it makes from the blue one it came with. Have fun!
ill be making a make shift white back drop I have a photographer who is a friend will ask him for some tips and the best way to set up. will share his tips when i get them!
Its hard to offer advice tips without know more about the kit, like is a whitebox? does it include a background whats in and do you have a picture of it?

My son gave me a light box kit for Christmas (he's such a wonderful boy!). If you look in my shop my four feature items and the row below those (excluding the pocket calendar) were taken with the box. I'm still learning which exposure settings to use on my camera so I had to do a little extra tweaking in Photoshop. Compared to my older photos farther down the page, they're a million times better.
I taped together two pieces of 12x12 white cardstock and use it as my backdrop (one sheet for the back and one for the bottom, the tape is to keep the two pieces together so there's not much of a seam). I could still see the "seam" in my photos but I blended it out in Photoshop. It wasn't necessary but I was just playing around. ;-)
I set my white balance to daylight flourescent light. I'm still working on getting the correct exposure setting. I considered using a third light in back (I have an OTT daylight lamp that I could use) but found it really wasn't necessary.
I have a lightbox bought from Amazon that I like. I use 3 lights - they are the daylight bulbs that are the squiggly pig-tail kind (see how informative I am?). One goes on top and one on each side. I use a large piece of white Bristol paper I bought from Michaels as my backdrop. The kit came with some backdrops, but the white was not really white I thought. One thing I have noticed is I need to turn the room lights off so the only light I am getting is from the daylight bulbs. I forget this sometimes and I can tell a difference in my photos. I use two lamps, one on either side. The white lining of my box has too much texture so I spread out white printing paper under and behind my catnip toys. The photos are always dark, but they lighten up nicely with the "levels" dropper tool in photoshop elements.

I forgot to mention the same thing in my post. My photos came out better in the evening when I turned the room lights off (or I close the blinds during the day).
