What camera do you own?

I am researching my next camera purchase (from my shop pics you will see why), and would like some feedback from this team. What camera do you use to take your shop photos? Would you recommend it?

Re: What camera do you own?

I have a Sony Cyber-shot (a few years old) and I love it. It is very easy to use and takes great pictures. The close-up (macro) works great.

Re: What camera do you own?

I have a canon S5IS and I love it. I bought it 4 years ago and it wasn't intended for my jewelry but that's what I use for. It's got a lot features but I only use two when taking my shots. It works great for me.

Re: What camera do you own?

I don't own it but I use a Nikon Coolpix S8100. Great macro setting, although because of the way it automates exposure and whatnot, I'm not able to get my pictures as white as I'd like without going in with GIMP and adjusting things by hand.

Re: What camera do you own?

I use a Sony alpha, which is cheeper than the canon and nikon equivalents but has better features. Sony are making great cameras as they are trying to break the market, meaning they have to offer better for less. You're paying for the name... Good luck and I hope that helps!

Re: What camera do you own?

Canon PowerShot SX150 IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera
Easy to use and inexpensive. I think like $175- $200

I find it super easy to use and I think my pictures are adequate.

Re: What camera do you own?

I use a Nikon D3000, which is the older. base model DSL. But I've learned that what really makes a difference is the lens.

Re: What camera do you own?

We both use D300's but considering that's our tool of the trade, we need something with a bit of grunt ;)

For product photography though, most point and shoots are good! I used to use a Canon Powershot A610 when I had another shop on here and the photo's were just as good as what can be produced off an DSLR.
When taking the photo's though you need to concentrate on using natural light (near a window is good!), if the light's too bright, use a bit of light thin material to diffuse the light a little, that way you won't get long dark shadows over your product. Try not to use the camera's flash as this also doesn't help with the shadowing.

Re: What camera do you own?

A Nikon D3000, it's a great camera but has more bells and whistles than I need. I'm sure that one day when I learn it better it will take awesome pictures. But it's doing a really good job considering the operator is stumbling her way through learning how to use it. I will say one thing - if my jewelry isn't freshly polished before I photograph it, this camera picks up every speck of dust, lint, and fingerprint!!!! I can even tell when there's a tiny smudge on my backdrop paper - time to get new stock for backgrounds! I can't get away with anything with this camera - it picks up everything there is to see as far as detail is concerned. It also has an in-camera edit feature, which I am beginning to think is pretty useful - you can crop, use filter effects, correct color, the whole bit as soon as you take your picture.

Re: What camera do you own?

I'm with Kelly and Adam.

I have used a Canon Powershot for years and have loved it. It's point and shoot, but gives you great options for many manual settings for better control. It takes clear, crisp photos (and does fun stuff - color swap, panoramic stitching, etc, too - not that you'd use those things for your shop though!)

I'm now shooting with a Canon Rebel T3i. The decision to purchase this was for my personal photography and not for my shop, and I truly feel that my Canon Powershot gave me great photos for my shop.

The natural light is so key for any camera.

Re: What camera do you own?

I have my point and shoot Olympus FE-230. I have had this camera since 2007 and it still works great and takes wonderful pictures. I think at the time I only paid around $100 for it.

Re: What camera do you own?

I have a sony cyber shot. You don't need a super expensive camera. I also own a canon t2i and I have found myself always using my cyber shot and not the more expensive canon.

Re: What camera do you own?

Thank you everyone for your input! Do you feel lighting is more of a key component to the good photos versus cost of the camera?

Re: What camera do you own?

I have a Nikon D3100. A good camera can make up for some poor lighting that a cheaper one can't.
