If you use Facebook, Twitter, or any other social networking site to promote your shop, please take this as a heads up---would hate it if any Etsians fell into this trap!

On Twitter, I got various messages saying:

"OMG, someone is complaining the product you just sold them."
"Look at these pics my friend posted of you. How embarrassing!"

(There were at least 10 different messages from 5 different users)

With the message there was a link. DO NOT CLICK THE LINK. It will spread viruses through your computer, and/or it's just a rip off spammer trying to get you to buy something. (my friend clicked---needless to say, it was a mess to clean up.)

Hope this helps some people out!

Thanks for the warning. I'm new to Facebook and was thinking about signing up with Twitter. Now I'm thinking twice about Twitter. I'll definately be careful.

Don't get me wrong, Helen. Twitter is great for promoting. Just never click a link that's tweeted or messaged to you :)

Very good advice! I might have thought twice about clicking it; now I definitely won't click it at all...just like with e-mail from folks I don't know. thank you!

Re: Warning to those who use Facebook, Twitter, etc...

Yes, I had this happen to me but luckily I received the 'account is hacked' message before I did anything! Too unfortunate that these type of messages get around because it really made me nervous that my products were being mocked somewhere.

Re: Warning to those who use Facebook, Twitter, etc...

I have FB and Twitter accounts but never use them and do not pay attention to messages from either one. I do appreciate the warning. Something like that may tempt me to click on it, but now I certain won't do it.

Katie- Appreciate it. Some people do not now when they are getting spammed. It is important to let others know when we receive spam messages so they don't fall victim to spam.

Re: Warning to those who use Facebook, Twitter, etc...

Thanks for the warning. That is annoying :/
I have never seen it on a fb page, but have seen it on friends pages where it has a nasty pic and said it said my friend said "oh, check this out!" when I know they didn't post it.
I hardly ever mess with twitter but have seen a few start to follow me and in their description it says something about how they are looking for adult companionship (to put it nicely). I got rid of them and hit the 'report to twitter' button I think it was called. Gross...

Didn't realize though that you could be logging in to fb and it is a trick. I will start checking the URL from now on...

Good info, thanks :)

Re: Warning to those who use Facebook, Twitter, etc...

I have had this happen a couple of times on Twitter. I get a message saying "someone is saying terrible things about you" with a link and I just ignore it and if it keeps happening I just delete that follower. :)

Re: Warning to those who use Facebook, Twitter, etc...

I look at my list of followers every now and then to check out the new ones. I look at the content of their tweets to see if they're genuine followers or spammers, then I block the spammers. I just did that a few minutes ago (this thread reminded me) and I'm happy to report that none of my new followers are spammers this time. :D

Re: Warning to those who use Facebook, Twitter, etc...

Had that happening last month as well.
Someone actually hacked some info and I had to change quiet a few passwords. Be careful. It did not do any damage to my computer as I have an apple...sigh but it was a hassle making sure they can no longer phish.

Re: Warning to those who use Facebook, Twitter, etc...

I do the same thing, Judy. Yay!! Usually 1 out of every 10 or 11 followers is a spammer for me.. (-_-)

Re: Warning to those who use Facebook, Twitter, etc...

Yes I received a message from a fellow etsian on twitter saying something a long those lines. Luckily I am not stupid. I sent her a private message saying I think you have been hacked. All sorted.

Re: Warning to those who use Facebook, Twitter, etc...

I got the message..and of course had to know who was talking about me...this steals your password and then tweets to everyone who follows you, "so and so is talking about you". All you need to do is change your password and problem is resolved...all though I had some explaining to do to my followers, and my daughter who thought I was talking about her.
