Total amount spent on packaging?

I was just wondering if some of you could tell me about how much your total packaging costs are, including presentation/branding supplies and packing/mailing supplies. I'm in the process of changing my packaging so that's it's more cost effective... I realize it depends on the items you are selling, but I'm just curious!

Thanks!

Marie

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

It probably works out to between $1.50 - $3 depending on the size of the order. I use solid seasonal or plain colored gift boxes (usually 7"x5"x3"), a plastic resealable bag for each ornament, a bit of tissue paper for space filler, a business card, brown paper and tape to wrap, a return label and an address label (fragile stickers and air mail stickers as well but they are free from the post office)... I buy all those things in bulk so the cost is lower and they last longer.

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

I would estimate that my average package costs about $.50 for a poly bag, tissue paper, raffia ribbon and business card. The cost for total packaging my bowls are about $1.25 due to the box.

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

I buy packaging materials from the local Dollar Tree here, so the shipping package costs like $0.50, then I use sleeves for for my individual cards, so that comes out to $0.58, and then I reuse tissue paper and bubble wrap from orders I've purchased. I try to keep it as low as possible since shipping is so much.

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

Between 1.00 and 2.00 I purchase cardboard boxes from walmart to ship my items in. It's nothing fancy, but my items are quite large. And, sometimes free, when I use priority shipping envelopes/boxes. You can order them for free from USPS.com

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

Well, I got out a calculator and figured it up per each so this is what all my shipping/packaging supplies cost. For reference, I ship everything wrapped in a sheet of tissue paper and sealed with a branded sticker. Most things go into bubble mailers, except for jars which have to go in boxes. So here you go:

tissue paper: .10c
custom sticker: .03c
custom mailing labels: .10c
bubble mailers: .15c
boxes: $2.80
biodegradable packing peanuts: .30c per box full

So it costs me .38c for each order that goes in an envelope and $3.33 for each box. Assuming each order only using one sheet of tissue paper.

I also include a biz card and a "care for" card with each order, but I got those printed via trade so I'm not sure how to calculate price on that.

This was kinda fun. ^.^

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

A t-shirt costs an average $3 shipping domestic, depending on the envelope sending it by USPS domestic. The delivery confirmation/tracking adds another 90 cents, plus the packaging, wrapping papers, cards, tapes...etc, it comes out to $5 ish.

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

I have dust covers sewn and personalized for me, they can cost anywhere from $1.50- $3.00. Mailing a bag is expensive, the boxes are big, I buy my boxes on line from U-Line, or when I can I recycle a box.

bubble envelope: 0.30 - 0.50 cents
tissue paper: 0.10 cents
custom memo: 0.20 cents (custom memo note that includes my logo, email, and website, so i don't include my business card)

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

I use poly mailers that I bought in bulk on Amazon. They came out to be about 5 cents each. My cards are put into a cello envelope, other smaller or larger items are put in a ziploc bag. I then wrap the item in white tissue paper & ribbon or string (sometimes just ribbon). I include a business card (from Vistaprint), a coupon code card that I printed myself and a hand written thank you note, usually on a mini card I made myself. I've never sat down to do the math but I'm going to guess that my packaging costs are around 50 cents. The most expensive part is the ribbon.

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

I try to buy everything as cheap as possible, but I can't help buying more packaging supplies when it calls my name at the craft store. I honestly don't even want to add it up, great business plan I know lol.

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

Honestly I didn't know either until totaling it up yesterday. My problem is the rigid mailer is $2.20. My cost was around $6.00 before! My new packaging will be around $4.50, including the mailer. At least it's better than $6.00!

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

I'm still in the process of "finalizing" what I want to use as my packaging so any info on where people get their items for so cheap would be great! When you were a new shop did you take the plunge and order in bulk with the anticipation sooner or later sales would come or did you purchase as orders came in since they weren't as consistent?

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

Poly bubble mailers - .12
kraft jewelry box - .24
organza ribbon - .10
thank you card - .15 (custom printed here on Etsy)
Total packaging = .61

The adhesive shop labels for my boxes are free from Vista Print, as are the magnetic business cards I include with some orders.
Any other necessary packing materials such as bubble wrap or peanuts are recycled, so they're free.

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

I buy my 4x8" poly bubble mailers (which fit my 2x3" jewelry boxes perfectly) by the case of 300 for 37.99 with free shipping from www.PackitRight.com

For my 3.5" square jewelry boxes, I buy the 6x10" poly bubble mailers from www.Royalmailers.com when they have a sale by the case of 100 for 20.99 and shipping is free.

Re: Total amount spent on packaging?

My packaging is fairly cheap, I read an article about 6 months ago from one of the top sellers in the type of product that I sell which said not to bother with fancy packaging, and I made the switch, no complains from my customers, in fact I've had quite a few return customers, which surprise me for hats.

I buy plastic shipping envelops about 11 cents
Since I know my postman likes to leave stuff on my doorstep with out outer plastic regardless of weather, I always, put my hats in a store brand ziplock style bag inside, maybe another 10 cents. I actually store my stock this way till ready to ship.

Lastly, I but my shipping labels off of amazon, again maybe 10 cents

So I'm guessing a total of about 30 cents
