Title Length Question

Is there a certain word length that is best for titles? I've heard that the first 3 or 4 words are picked up on SEO but not the rest of the sentence really.

My titles are pretty long because I'm trying to cram all the keywords I can in. For example here is one: "Brown Pink Nursery - Baby Girl Room Decor - Pink Handmade Flowers Art Frame"

Does adding extra keywords help at all in Etsy searches?

Re: Title Length Question

From my experience shorter is better. Try to think like a customer, or how a customer would type in the search bar.....or how you would type in the search bar.

Then try to repeat that title somewhere close to the top of your description or in the body of your description......then again in your tags.

Lovely shop,
Mickey

Re: Title Length Question

Short, to the point titles that give 2 keyword phrases are quite enough. Etsy puts the most weight on the first 3 words, while Google looks at the whole title. If it is longer that say 65 characters Google ignores the rest.

Using the Google preview on your listing page, make sure that it is readable there before the "from your shop" perspective. If it seems like jumbled up words it is probably not helping you. It should sound conversational and it should be relevant to your title.

Your tags are where you put the words that don't fit or don't allow your title to be short and concise. Etsy looks at the tags right after the title to determine relevancy. Google ignores the tags completely so you will want to use the keywords or tags through out your description to be found on Google.

One final note, your title ends up being your ALT text for your images as well. Google will look at this in part with the keywords in your title to determine the relevancy of your page. So it is also good to use the keywords from your title in your descriptions as well.

I run a blog that goes into much more detail about these subjects and much more. http://marketmyshop.blogspot.com Just check out the archives for tons of free info.

Re: Title Length Question

Great info. I recommend Eric's (TangledMetal's) Market My Shop blog. I'm lost when it comes to marketing, and the blog info has been so helpful.

Re: Title Length Question

I agree.

First three words is very important to get the right keywords for the search.

The preview of your google search is also important to relevancy outside of the etsy search.

Re: Title Length Question

I personally use lots of words aka my keywords in my title or as many as I can fit. I figure customers don't see the full description when they just search so I like to put info in the title. I'm pretty new, but I've noticed that using my keywords in the title, descriptions, and keywords have landed me on the front page of most of my main searches and I've had a good start to my business. I don't think this is the only reason of course, but I think it helps! Just one woman's opinion though. And TangledMetal makes some great points too!

Re: Title Length Question

Thanks for posting this. I finally get answers too! This new relevancy has me confused and thinking titles are much too long. Now I know the key(s).
Thanks everyone.
