Tips for having a successful sale event? Share with me!

Hey all, I would love your input and advice! I'm planning to make August a big sale month so I can raise funds for returning to school. Textbooks costs... ouch!

So far I know I'll be sharing this via Twitter, Facebook, and with some of my Etsy teammates. I have some friends who will be sharing as well on their social media sites. I'm even purchasing some blog ad space for the shop as well.

Here is my question - what have you found brings the most success for your sale events? Discounts (like Etsyonsale or perhaps a coupon code) or free gift with purchase or free shipping... what will appeal the most and result in a successful sales event?

Any tips or ideas would be appreciated.

I've found that marketing the sale well in advance to my target customer is the best way to run a sale.

I've been doing some promotion for my Summer CIJ sale (due to start next week) but the newsletter promotion went out on June 30th to give my readers a 'head start' on the sale. So far many of my customers have taken advantage of it.

Many Etsians are taking part in the Christmas In July promotions from July 11th - 21st as summer is one of the slower times for many shops.

Thank you, Crochetgal. I do plan on doing the Christmas in July sale as well. I don't have a mailing list right now, although I am working on getting it started. It's great to hear that it's working so well for you!

I've done buy 2 get your 3rd (lowest price) item free sales and it was BUSY.......might need to adjust your shipping times if you do that but customers seemed to love it :)

I do buy 5 get the 6th free. I have had it up for a while on my shop. I do it to try to encourage people to buy multiple items.
