Time to Revamp my Shop Sections?

Happy New Year! :)

It’s a new year and I’m thinking of changing the format of my shop. In particular, I want to change my shop sections.

I sell mostly art prints that span a fantasy range (angels, fairies, etc.). Currently, my shop sections are set up by print size (5x7 Prints, 8x12 Prints, etc). I’m thinking it may be easier for shoppers to see sections by subject (Angel Art Prints, Animal Art Prints, etc.). I would then add additional sizes in the description with links. But before I invest my time in this endeavor, I thought I’d reach out and get an idea as to whether this was a wise decision.

So my question is, if you were shopping for an art print, would you want to browse through the subject (i.e. angels) or would it be more important to browse through sections by the size you wanted?

Shannon, I SO wish we could do both! If we could have subcategories, that would be possible (maybe someday).

It depends upon whether what you are doing works for your customers of course, but one thing to consider is that section names are searchable in Google. You will have the ability to use better keywords if you change to the subject rather than size.

For me, I would prefer to browse by subject matter rather than size.

I'd probably look by subject. Unless the buyer is trying to fill a particular frame, I don't think they'd search by size.

If you have shop sections by subject but put the size in a tag, would a search of your shop pull up the particular sizes? That might help narrow it down for someone looking to decorate a certain size space.

I'd section by category rather than size. I'd love to be able to search for "angel" and have your shop show right up in the search results. Beautiful prints, by the way!

I think by subject, but how do you buyers search for your shop? If your keywords are size, section by size. If your keywords are subject, section by subject.

Great suggestions, everyone! Thank you so much for the feedback! :D I'll work on changing my sections this week and rearranging everything. It'll be worth the effort if people can find what they are looking for quicker. Thanks again and have a great 2013!

I always search by subject/theme/topic rather than size. I think most people also realize that any size can be changed. Plus, the best thing about shop sections is that they work toward your Etsy SEO so it's much better to go by what they are vs. what size they are!
