The goose that laid the golden eggs

Have you had a piece that you're so sure would be the next best seller, and just... peh nothing happen. No one seems to even glance it. Not even a tiny peek. 20 views in the last 4 months. And you know the next best move is to say goodbye to it when it expires. There you dream going down the drain. A bit of a drama here...

And there is another piece that you just put together because you thought to get back what you spend. In my case, funds to shop for more charms and feel less guilty about feeding my addiction. And you pretty much don't care about the piece. You would even give it for free. If only someone dares to ask

Every time the piece got sold you groan out loud. Because you're so not in love with it. And the next thing you know, you're stocking it just because it gives you morale boost when you're on no sales land. It becomes, somewhat, the golden goose. Laying all those gold eggs. And you sigh...

Then someone is raving at you of how much she likes the piece (that you put together because you don't have better thing to do), Of course you graciously accept the praise with a pretty thank you. But deep down you thought, "Did she really mean it?"

Just Friday morning stories of our lives to keep the day going... :-)

Do you have the piece(s)? You don't really love it but don't want it to go away too... because when you feel down due to no sales, it is the one that comforts you. It brings in something and gives you hope and makes your day... sort of

Have a luvly weekend gals and ladies and gents

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

That's interesting. It's a good example of people having different tastes. It's not something that you particularly love but it seems that you have found a target market.

Maybe you could make variations of this product and really try to grow it into something that you really love.

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

So now my curiosity is up.... Which is the piece that you love and thought would sell, and which is your groan?

Hayley's advice is brilliant: Maybe you could make variations of this product and really try to grow it into something that you really love.

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

I am going to agree with @ChrisOnly

I just sold two of my pieces that were in my original 20 items when I started in Feb.

These items never got views or put into T's etc.

They had expired & I hesitated ....but in the end I relisted them & now I'm glad I did!

:)

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

I have not had a single sale on any of the items that I have posted, so I know how it feels to be saleless. I am trying to get more done, so I can list them as well. Maybe this will end up happening to me too. But maybe you shouldn't think so negatively on that piece that sold. You should think of every sale as a good sale, and continue making what sells, happily.

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

Just drop by to see what's what. Then, I am off to the PO

Haley & Janet
Love the ideas. Make the variation of the "gold egg" :-) one. Somethng I love. You gals get my brain churning... thinking that is

Mary
You made me chuckle there. They are quite a few. If you guess it right, I'll send it to you as an Xmas gift

Heather
:-) You're so not alone. I bet (most) everyone here experiences it at one point or another

Chris, Robbin, Hope
You three have the same ideas, and your posts lined up in a row. Chris, I feel inspired... wow! You go gal. Now I have to dig out one of those designs I ditched thinking they were flop... what do we know huh

Misty,
Good luck with the posting and crafting. Love your crocheted doilies. So romantic. They make a place a home. Right! Every sales is a good sale. All is appreciated.

Off to PO gals...

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

I think we all go through this on Etsy. Weighing the costs of re-listing and feeling the way you do.

I have pared down my shop by 50% tough decision but then I included pictures of a different color of the same earring, same price and let the buyer choose.

You can show like 5 pictures of different earrings for the same price. Like your red roses earrings, yellow roses earrings, etc. And I've seen sellers list one pair of earrings, then added the other color choices for the buyer, but they're not made yet.

I hope this helps. Your items are very nice and very popular styles so if you can get more exposure it should take off.

Best of luck to you and to all Etsians in this hugely competitive jewelry market : )

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

I know exactly how you feel. My golden egg became my children's bow ties. I LOVE making hair accessories and tutus for children, but somehow my bow tie sales are trumphing everything else in the shop.

I am so grateful for the bow ties sales, but I feel bad for my poor little headbands and clips sitting there getting no attention at all.

My husband jokes that I'm now "Bow Ties and Things", but it doesn't roll off the tongue for me like my current shop name, so I'm not changing it, lol!

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

LOL. You just never know, do you? I would definitely renew. I had one thing that I loved and it was featured in quite a few treasuries. I didn't think it would ever sell but, eventually it did,
I don't have any items that I hate but I did have a few orders close together that called for pink roses. I must have cut and curled close to 800 pink roses. I was getting tired of pink!
Have a great day all.

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

Keep listing that favorite item. Things that have so much of your heart in them are unique and vibrant. It takes time for the right person to find that item-- the person who will adore it and be willign to spend the money for your creativity. It won't be just anyone.

Here is one of my favorites. When it FINALLY found a buyer, he was so excited. Wrote me a thank you note about how proud he was to give the gift. I treasure that.

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

I agree! I have designs in my shop that I worked for MONTHS on designing, to get them just right. They are my favorite ones in my shop. Have I made any of them? No.

Which one is the most popular? The one I just threw together and almost didn't even put up because I though it didn't really have much to it. As much as am sick of making that invitation for people, I won't take it down since it brings people into my shop! That one invitation design counts for probably 1/3 of all orders and has almost quadruple the likes than almost all the others in my shop.

I also blame etsy finds for this.. That is the only design of mine that has ever been featured in an email....

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

hehehe, deffinetly! I had these doll angels I used to make- basically lacey matterial with a styrofoam ball inserted at the top for a head, no face & pretty wings. I made a few, they sold, I made a few more.... I did craft shows with boxes of those things, and entire display because they sold so well. I would sell out within hours, and the rest of my 'real' stuff would languish! It became my joke after a while; they were kind of cute, but at $25 for one, verses $30 for a doll with all the accessories, I just shook my head over it!

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

This is good to hear, we all feel the same way. I have to rethink those old pieces. I haven't listed them because they don't fit the direction I want to go in!

Oh yes...happens to me...just when I think I need to just put it on a sale or just let it expire...boom...somebody comes along and buys it!
I only wish that would happen often LOL!

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

This has happened to me too, and I've had mixed feeling about it. I've been happy when something that's been around a long time finally sells. Usually I chalk it up to serendipity, and feel that it finally found the right owner.

Sometimes I think that an old listing is there because of bad photography. I just had a baby cap expire that is so cute. SO CUTE. why hasn't it sold in two or more years? Is it that photo of it on an old doll? Is that too creepy? It's in blue and purple, and the colors come out so different in various lighting. I think I just need fresh photos of that one.

And then again, if it doesn't sell, I can use it for a baby gift, if needed.

I don't think there is any magic answer. It's just human nature - we can't figure that out!

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

I have pieces that I get frustrated with because they look so much better in real life than in pictures and I wish everyone could see them like I do, but I actually love all of my items!
I only sell things I would wear. I have only been on Etsy for a few months though, so maybe in a year I'll be sick to death at looking at certain items.
Kriya, your store is beautiful by the way! ♥

Re: The goose that laid the golden eggs

Don't despair. Keep relisting what sells; it'll pay for the items you love to make. Tastes change and maybe the next wave will be what you love to do!
