Tags tags tags!

Hi there everyone!

I see people always suggesting to "play with your tags" or "change your tags up" but they never really give you suggestions for something different than what you already have. I saw the goggle application where they give you suggestions based on what has been searched but after a few tries it says I must pay for adds.

Can any give me ideas on how to change up my tags?
How do you come up with new tags for your items?

What I've been doing and has been helping is start typing the name of the item into Etsy's search, and see what suggestions come up. Like if it's a Cheetah photograph, I start typing cheetah, and it gives me a small list of cheetah related searches that people have recently done. Then I'll try the same thing for "wild animal" "art" etc. Obviously only use the ones that are relevant, but you might be surprised at the different variations people are looking for.

Also look at your previous month's search result stats, see how people are finding you, and make sure those tags are in your items.

You have really cool stuff, I think I would describe them a little different you have to think like a shopper. For example
http://www.etsy.com/listing/100536475/titanium-agate-crystal-cluster-necklace

You could try:
Blue Multi colored stone necklace bohemian style- handmade with antique brass, Fantasy Crystal.

Something along those lines... hopefully this helped a bit :D

Re: Tags tags tags!

Here is a puzzle I need help with. I have a pair of lady bug booties and I have found them non existant in my searches or way way back in the page selection. I looked at what auto search selections come up and this is an interesting conundrum.

"lady bug" is often spelled as one word (ladybug) or two words (lady bug). The auto fill for Lady bug suggests Children - Clothing. That has 31 pages of lady bug finds.

The auto fill for Ladybug suggests Children - Babies. That has 18 pages of ladybug finds.

My original tags were Children - Babies - Booties since that fits best but the auto suggestion that comes up first is Children - Clothing - so I changed my tagging system and now am way back on page 7.

Should I go back to Children - Babies even though it doesn't come up as an auto suggestion if someone types in Lady bug (two words).

If someone types in lady bug booties then the selection is more limited and I can be found but that is a pretty specific search if someone just wants a lady bug themed item for their baby.

Any suggestions????

Barbara are you talking about titles or tags? If it's tags there's no reason why you can put every variation that is accurate(you get 13...). If you're talking titles, you could try variations. Try the one suggested and see if you get any hits from it over the next week, if you don't, then try the other suggestion. If you have more than one lady bug option, try different ones on each and see which one gets found more.

In my tags I use both spellings for grey, gray. You can do that for lady bug, ladybug.

Re: Tags tags tags!

When you go to the "list an item" page you put in categories at the beginning of the listing. These three categories end up being the first three tags in your tag section. I can either go Children-clothing-shoes or Children-babies-booties.

I just recently put in both spellings of ladybug in my tags.

But... as I stated in my first post the auto select search item is different depending on how you spell ladybug. If someone chooses Children-clothing-shoes and I did not pick those categories then my item does not show up. This seems to be an issue with the auto select search suggestions.

does that make sense?
