Sponsored Giveaway Help!

Hi All-

I reached out to a blogger to have a giveaway on her site. She said that the sponsorship fee is $100 for 1 month. Totally fine!

Then as we discussed the giveaway post, she has asked me twice what I am going to send her to keep in addition to the giveaway prize.

Is this the norm? I'm not sure how to answer the question, because honestly after the $100 I feel that's enough. She does preface it with, 'If you want to'; but then has straight out asked what I will be giving to her.

Help please?

Thanks much,

Whitney

Re: Sponsored Giveaway Help!

Hello Whitney! I've never done that before so I'm not sure about the norm thing. If I were you, I would probably give something to her because she will be the one writing about your item on her blog... and maybe she will be extra sweet and nice while promoting your items for you. Besides, even if the item you give her doesn't go to the public, she might still have friends and family that she will talk to about you sending her this wonderful gift :) Just my opinion. Good luck!

Re: Sponsored Giveaway Help!

I don't know what the 'norm' is, but I know that all bloggers have different requirements. I know, as a blogger I have listed on my blog any sort of requirements for sponsors and exactly what they get and what I get. I think that this is how most of the ones who are serious do it. I would look to see if she has something like that somewhere, and then if she does confront her about not seeing something in it that she was to get something as well. Or, just play dumb like you didn't realize she wanted something, but say you are happy to send her something. Whenever I look into doing giveaways I always giveaway the things I make the most on. Like the things that are supercheap for me to make but I sell at a high price. So they get value without me spending a lot. I may be just rambling now, and I hope it helps, and good luck.

Re: Sponsored Giveaway Help!

Sorry but I don't pay anything at all to be featured on a blog.

My policy for anyone who wants to 'review' my products is that they first purchase the product and I will provide them with a referral code to use in their promotions.

For each $100 worth of sales that referral brings to my shop, they get a credit of 10% of the product price.

That way we both benefit.

If this is agreeable I ask that they please go ahead and make their purchase and I'll include the exclusive referral code for use on the blog in my confirmation email.

Re: Sponsored Giveaway Help!

Paying someone big money so you can give her and her readers more stuff for free?
Sounds nuts to me!

Re: Sponsored Giveaway Help!

Um, no, that doesn't sound right at all to me, as both a blogger who hosts giveaways occasionally, and a shop owner. I really would not pay them at all, ESPECIALLY $100, that's insane! Sometimes you have to pay like $80 for a premium ad spot, and that will include an ad on the blog or website, tweets throughout the month, an exclusive giveaway spot and so on, but you NEVER give them an additional present along with that $80. And bear in mind that that $80 is along the lines of a pretty amazing blog with a very, very strong following, 5000+

I think, however you look at it, if you've already payed her, you've been ripped off big time. She doesn't seem interested in helping to promote your shop, just getting free stuff for doing next to nothing. The $100 is more than enough, and it would cover several items from your shop if she really wanted something.

Another question I'd have to ask is this: is she expecting you to send HER the giveaway prize? Because that's a no-no as well in my book. It's far too easy for a blogger to keep the item herself. At least if you're responsible for posting it to the winner, you can respect your work and make sure it's going where it's supposed to, rather than potentially being stolen, which would give the winner a bad opinion of your shop because you "never posted it".

In my opinion, get your money back and run. It seems a bit too dodgy to me.

Re: Sponsored Giveaway Help!

I participated in a blog and it was hinted that I give a gift for the blogger, but not money like the $100 you are being asked to pay. I also gave a giveaway prize to one of her readers. It was a HUGE waste of my time and I will never participate in one again. I was new and looking for more exposure. It sounds funny that she wants money and a free gift from you - Greed really.

See if you can get your money back if you already sent it.

Re: Sponsored Giveaway Help!

You have to pay $100 to be fatured in a blog giveaway?? No way!

I was contacted by a site do a giveaway on their blog and FB, but I didn't pay anything. All I had to do is send photos of the item and when the giveaway was over I shipped the giveaway to whoever won it. That was it. The site did 21 giveaways in 21 day before Christmas and it got a lot of new fans, and so did I. Win win situation for both of us. And a few days after the giveaway the girl who won my giveaway posted a really nice comment on my FB.

Re: Sponsored Giveaway Help!

I host giveaways on my blog: giveawaycentral21.blogspot.com, and I only charge $3 for Etsy shop owners to participate for an entire month (and I do a system where all they give away is the $3 and have their shop and social media sites promoted for the entire month). $100 is a huge amount, and would only be worthwhile if you were doing the giveaway on a really well known blog that has thousands of loyal followers. That's a ridiculous amount of money!!

Re: Sponsored Giveaway Help!

On my blog; skwirejewelry.wordpress.com I do feature spots for fellow etsy team members and I don't charge a dime. I don't have thousands of blog followers but my write up is quality, positive marketing for you, and is done with integrity. I don't offer features to make money or to receive free products, I offer features to get our work noticed, and that's what Word of Mouth is all about. If you offer a giveaway through your skwirejewelry.wordpress.com feature, I send you the recipients direct contact because that transaction should always be between you and the winner of your giveaway item, not me. I get traffic, you get traffic, it's a win/win we both benefit.

But I appreciate the time and effort Kiana and Terri above have put into their dedicated giveaway blog and $3 for a month long etsy shop and social media site traffic surge is well worth the small cost. I'm taking advantage of the opportunity they offer, I'm looking forward to the return. Thanks Kiana & Terri, and thank your for this thread - it's great information to think about.

Re: Sponsored Giveaway Help!

Thanks, everyone! I never paid her. But we were in heavy discussions about the process. I was excited about the exposure, but the price and freebie just for her seemed too great!
