Should I wash the bodysuits beforehand?

I'm starting to sell infant bodysuits and toddler t shirts and as of now I've been prewashing and drying the shirts before I apply the iron on transfer.

Do you think I should skip washing them? I know I always wash my son's new clothing before he wears it, but I'm not sure everyone does this.

What would you prefer as a buyer?

Thanks!

I think you should, to account for any shrinkage before you put the applique on. If you put the applique on before hand and then it gets washed, the applique may shrink, too, but at a different rate. Then there would be unattractive pulls and puffs in your work.

Re: Should I wash the bodysuits beforehand?

I just started embroidering and dyeing and I wash, obviously, after dyeing and before embroidering, but also the plain white ones I prewash as well.

Thanks for the feedback Anita!

If you were to buy it (hypothetically), would you still wash it before you put in on your child even if it said it was prewashed and preshrunk?

I would still wash it. But I'm a freak like that. lol. But I like it it is prewashed and preshrunk. I would wash just for the pure fact that no matter how well it is packaged and protected from the elements, the mail is still gross. And I wash everything before it can be worn.

I wash everything before it's warn. I, personally, wouldn't want it washed ahead of time, but if it affects your designs, I understand.

Re: Should I wash the bodysuits beforehand?

Oh, I like that it is washed before more for the design shrinkage aspect not for the cleanliness factor. Erica made me realize I forgot to explain that. :)

Re: Should I wash the bodysuits beforehand?

Yeah I wash everything too, especially if it's going on my son!

But I never thought of the design shrinkage aspect, so that is a great point and probably makes it necessary to prewash!

Thanks for all the input!

Re: Should I wash the bodysuits beforehand?

When my kids were little, I washed everything before they wore it. Now that the youngest is 13, if she's in a hurry to wear it, I sometimes let it slide!

Re: Should I wash the bodysuits beforehand?

I would definitely wash them first before applying the iron-on transfers. I always do, as, like someone else pointed out, to shrink it before applying your transfer, and make sure the garment washes well overall.

Re: Should I wash the bodysuits beforehand?

I'm a quilter - if stuff isn't prewashed, you can get uneven pulls on appliques, or even on regular patchwork. It just makes life easier. Plus, the fabric is nicer to handle after the sizing has been washed out. I'm weird like that - if I don't like the way a fabric feels, I won't buy it.

Re: Should I wash the bodysuits beforehand?

I don't per wash my items. Most of my customers was their items after they get them anyway

Re: Should I wash the bodysuits beforehand?

Olivia, you should prewash, since you are sewing on appliques.
You need to prewash the applique fabrics too.
I would not buy an appliqued piece of clothing that was not prewashed. Different fabrics have different shrinkage. You want your creations to still be beautiful after your customer washes them.

Re: Should I wash the bodysuits beforehand?

That is very true BeaG. I guess I should start pre washing things. Although mine are securely sewn on so they don't shrink
