Shipping

Talk to me about how you set up shipping? I started making my items have my own set shipping with my own multiple item discounts. Now I'm liking the thought of having Etsy calculate it all for me. But It looks like when I set up a shipping profile, it's asking for processing time. From what I've read, the shipping profile is applied the same to all listings that I want the shipping profile applied to. What if half my items have different processing times than the other half and I want the shipping profile applied to all listings? Do they calculate how much it would cost to ship a small light item along with a larger heavier item? When it asks for product dimensions, are they talking about the shipping containers or the actual product being mailed? Any tips on how to set up shipping? Do you use the shipping profile feature or do you set up your own shipping for each listing?

Re: Shipping

I believe a shipping profile is something you set up for a specific group of items that you know the shipping is all the same as well as the time frame. I have one shipping profile because all of my items generally weigh about the same and will take the same amount of time to create, if for some reason I don't have that item in stock. (I personally don't list any items that I do not already have in stock)

When they ask for dimensions that need the dimensions of the packaged product. I'm not sure how it is calculated for shipping two different sized items. I know that in my shipping profile I charge $3.00 for shipping and then add $1-2 in the section for any additional items.

Re: Shipping

I don't use the calculated shipping feature. I also charge a flat rate of $3.00 to ship an item and $1.00 additional for each additional item shipped at the same time. I have enabled the shipping upgrade feature. My items have the same time to prepare for shipping.

Good luck!

Re: Shipping

Are you still able to use the Print Etsy Shipping Label Feature if you set your own shipping prices?

Re: Shipping

Hi Katie,
I do not use the calculated shipping feature. I tried it and had issues with it charging too much for multiple item purchases.
I prefer to set my own shipping fee for each item and try to calculate in the cost of my box or padded envelope.
I always print my Etsy shipping labels from home and absolutely love it and have not had any problems with that at all.
Blessings to you,
<3 Jewel

Re: Shipping

You can have listings that are not linked to your shipping profiles. This accommodates items with longer shipping times. I use the shipping profiles and also print etsy labels and packing slips--it's a breeze!

Re: Shipping

I don't use calculated shipping simply because it really doesn't work for my items. (How do you determine the dimensions of a ball of yarn or a spool of thread?)

I've got my shipping profiles all set up based on weight, in increments of 1 oz until 1 lb and then in 8 oz increments after that.

I use Etsy labels but use the Paypal packing slips simply because they use much less ink and paper (and I like them much better).

There are a number of good help topics on how to set up calculated shipping and shipping profiles here:

Re: Shipping

if a customer purchases two items together with different shipping times the order record will not have a ships by date on the receipt. I have rush listings with shorter time frames and monogram add on listings with no processing times, and that's usually what happens when these type of listings are purchased with a regular listing with my standard 2 week production time frame.

I like the shipping profiles a lot. I have hundreds of listings and just needed to increase my production time frame to 3 weeks due to high sales volume. With the shipping profiles linked to the production time, making this change took a grand total of 3 minutes to change my processing time for every item in my shop. For that alone it was worth using the profiles.
