Shipping silver and gold from Europe to the US

Hi everyone!

I need your help because I have no idea about this topic. A spanish friend of mine and also an Etsy shop owner sold a necklace in the USA. But in the post office (in Spain of course) they told her that it's forbiden to ship silver or gold to that country. Can somebody tell me why is that so and if it exists some way to solve this kind of problem?

I think you have to declare it on the custom's label and pay for tracking for this. Not sure why it would be forbidden, but I only sell costume jewellery, so I will wait for an answer from a precious metals seller.

She lives in the US and sold a necklace to someone in Spain? They may have import restrictions on silver from another country.

Not true. Read it from the horses mouth - the house in this case US Customs and border protection. There are some requirements however.

I wasn't saying it was true - I was trying to make sure I understood the situation. Imports from Spain to here shouldn't be a problem. Imports to Spain might be more so, as one list I found said jewelry was sometimes restricted by Spanish customs. The European countries can be harder to sell jewelry to, depending on their restrictions.

If there is a law about silver to the US, then Spain has an export ban on it. The US shouldn't have a problem at all - I can't imagine that is so, however. Maybe she just needs to relabel the item as costume jewelry and be done with it.

I don't ever put sterling silver jewelry on a customs form - that's just asking for the item to disappear.

Erin -

I wasn't responding to you. That was in response to the person who said "...that it's forbiden to ship silver or gold to that country."
