Separate listings or one listing with variations?

I've been debating to have each item in one listing at .20 cents a pop or to just list one item with all of the colour variations and pay only .20 cents once. I know .20 is not a lot of money, but it adds up every month!

With one listing per item my exposure would be higher, but it's less expensive the other way. I'm inclined to keep it at one item/listing, but I'm experimenting with a few listings...

I would love to hear your ideas, experience and advice!

Re: Separate listings or one listing with variations?

How about trying a little of both and see which one works best for you over time? Having more postings visually for people to see is a good thing, but as a buyer if I see 20 of the same thing, just in a different color, that might be a little irritating to click through.

Re: Separate listings or one listing with variations?

That's a tough one. If I'm looking for a red scarf, I'll search "red scarf" first, then narrow down the search once I find a style I like. If red isn't listed in your title/tags this item won't come up in my search, even though it IS available in red. (great scarf, btw!)

Hmmmm...great point, Lynda...about clicking through so many things. True. Buuuut as a buyer, sometimes I like seeing exactly what I'm getting. It IS a good idea to mix it up and try it both ways and see what happens. Thank you!

Thank you, Judy! Yup, that was one of my problems with just having one listing with all of the colour variations...I can't add colour tags! More to think about...

Re: Separate listings or one listing with variations?

I think 100% that you should have each listing. Colour is such an important part of a scarf and other items if clothing- I would definitely like to see the full scarf in the colour, and would be more likely to click on a scarf in a colour I like. And there's the extra exposure as mentioned, as well as the key words you can use.

Also- think of how amazing your shop could look with all those beautiful scarf photos in all the different colours!

Re: Separate listings or one listing with variations?

I'm working on getting pictures of all my items in all the colors I offer. I get a lot of convos from people wanting to see a certain item in a certain color. I plan on having a separate listing for each color.

Re: Separate listings or one listing with variations?

I would have different listings. I used one listing once for variations on the theme and one time I had a customer want a duplicate of the item she bought several months earlier and couldn't find it because it wasn't the primary photo. Luckily she emailed me and I was able to sell her what she wanted but if your item is not fully represented in the main photo it gets confusing. Another example is if the main photo is a green scarf but you offer it in red also so put "red scarf" in your title or tag the green scarf will show in the search. Most people will not bother to read that the green scarf also comes in red - they will just skip over it.

Re: Separate listings or one listing with variations?

I designed and market a child's keepsake fabric growth chart. I mostly list each fabric and pay the .20 per listing. I find that I can mix up the listings to target a number of different searches for growth charts that people may use and also like the listing photo to reflect each fabric well.

Re: Separate listings or one listing with variations?

Wow, this is great feedback!! Thank you so much everyone! This is all very helpful.

I try to see myself as a buyer when I have my seller hat on and it does make sense to have the item I'm selling as the main photo. That's what I would want to see as a buyer too.

Perhaps what I'll do is have the separate listings for each item and also list the colour variations if someone wished to choose a custom order from a particular listing. Most of my orders for scarves and poufs are custom orders.

Cheers!

^perfect!
Also, be sure to include links to other colours or sections in the descriptions to make it easy to find other colours, and also because backlinks are great for SEO :-)

Re: Separate listings or one listing with variations?

Joanne, I have so much to learn about SEO, but glad to hear that backlinks are good! I have too many colours in some items and only supply a backlink to the section, not to each scarf...but maybe I'll take your advice and try it on a few items and see what happens. Thank you!

Re: Separate listings or one listing with variations?

So ca any one have suggestion for digital products as i created business card printing template and it is in different size i am little bit confused as first i decide to put all the frame in same file and if some one need any of them can buy that but on the other hand i can see it is might be confusing when a customer get  many different size as he is looking for one specific size. so i decided to put ever size in different listing but it cost me more. but i prefer the customer satisfaction is in the first priority, what you guys think?
