Secert Admirers?!

How is it that people can "admire " your shop and put it in their favorites but you know nothing about them. Is it someone looking for ideas? Not being paranoid but have noticed a few influenced designs out there. I have well over 20 seceret admirers. Just curious if anyone thought of this too.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

Of course it's crossed our minds. There really isn't anything we can do about it.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I thought secret admirers were just people who keep their list of favorites private? I don't think that implies nefarious intent, personally, just a more guarded nature.

ETA: one needn't hide their favorites to exploit them for their own gain.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I have a couple of secret admirers. I wonder why someone would want to keep that private I sometimes wonder who they are.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I've heard complaints from shop owners as well as buyers that when they add something to their favorites, they end up with a convo from the shop with a coupon code or something trying to talk them into buying it immediately.

Not only is that against TOU, it's intrusive and rude. The people that have gotten that tend to keep their favorites private after that.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I myself admire some people for their work, and only for their work. I see something that I really feel is a work of art or that is sooo... cute and I admire them for it. I don't do this for everyone, just those whose work really captures my eyes.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

If I were not an Etsy seller, I would definitely keep my favorites private, because I wouldn't like the idea of tons of people seeing what I like. Since I am, I like the sense of community.
I see it kind of like Amazon's wishlists: I always make those private because there's no reason for anyone else but me to know what I've favorited!

Re: Secert Admirers?!

i didn't even realise mine were private before i started selling rather than just buying, so i don't think there's necessarily anything untoward going on..
what i question more is when people have thousands of favourites..

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I buy a lot of my supplies here on etsy and I don't like that just anyone can see them but etsy doesn't let us have separate buyer accounts. I know a lot of people make their favorites private for this reason. Mine are still public, but sometimes I think about making mine private.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I have all my favorites as public because I like to share the awesome things I find with other. But, I do sometimes favor items that I want to get for someone as a gift and then I wish I had them private.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I always wondered this too! I guess throwing the word "secret" in there is what makes it so mysterious, lol. If they were just "admirer" then I don't think it would have even crossed my mind.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I keep my favorites private and I'm not looking to steal anyone's ideas... I think it's just people's personal preferences.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I think you're unnecessarily worried about 'secret admirers' motives. If somebody wanted to use your work for reference they could simply make a browser bookmark without going to the trouble of favouriting it using an Etsy account.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I don't understand why some people keep their faves private. Since circles are one of the ways that shops can gain exposure here on Etsy, keeping your faves private just goes against the whole idea. I'm not going to add you to my circle if you're keeping them private, and this will limit your own shop's exposure. I think it's fun to see what other people like, and have found some really awesome shops and items in my activity feed. I've only ever gotten two 'spam' convos from a shop after liking an item (they were both on the same item), and I simply reported it to Etsy and removed the item from my faves. As for supplies, I generally favorite the shop so I can find it again rather than a particular item I want to purchase.

Re: Secert Admirers?!

I keep my favorites private, as in, not on the Bio page. Is there a way to make them completely private?
