Scam?

Hi everyone,

I have been contacted by someone wanting me to consider placing some of my items in a gallery. The gallery exists but is out of state. How do I know if this is just a scam and what sort of questions should I be asking? I am really new to this and do not want to get taken or blow off a good opportunity.

Thank you for any help!

Re: Scam?

If the gallery exists you should be able to get a phone number off the internet. Call the number and double check. I know it's scary, I had a store contact me to carry my work and I was worried that I was sending hundereds of dollars worth of product to a scam artist. It wasn't a scam and I still sell with them (the store is five hours away so I wasn't able to visit). Do let an opportunity pass you by, just make sure you do your homework and make sure you get a contract.

I agree with Ann. Sometimes good opportunities are not very obvious. But definitely research as much as possible! Then follow your instincts. Negotiate, perhaps have a contract? Whatever is necessary to get a good deal and be happy with your decision. Good luck!!

Re: Scam?

Firstly, do your research.

Does the gallery actually exist? Who else is showing there?

What can you find out about the gallery on Google?

Then phone the gallery and ask questions. Speak to the curator.

Most importantly, find out how many pieces they want and then figure out whether or not you can afford to have them out of your control for any given period of time.

What insurance is on the pieces when in the gallery? What happens in the case of damage?

Make sure to cover all your bases before you commit to anything.

Congratulations! Yes, do your research, absolutely, then do a little happy dance because a gallery wants your work! WOO-HOO!

Re: Scam?

One thing to check first is the terms. I've had offers from galeries that looked interestings until I realized they wanted everything on consignement and that I was supposed to pay them a fee for advertising.

Re: Scam?

You're getting some great advice! You also might want to ask for references- maybe other artists that they carry so that you can contact them and get a feel for the gallery that way? I wouldn't know though as I'm not in your field.
