SEO and Stimulating Shop Traffic

I am a two year etsyian and I have come to the conclusion that my traffic to my shop needs to be stimulated. I worked on diverse tagging and seo to help stimulate more traffic. I am posting my wares on pintrest, facebook, and other social media sites to add to my stats.

For seasoned and successful shops I would love some grass roots advice on how you stimulated traffic to your shop and tips on how to prep items to increase their chances of going viral.

Re: SEO and Stimulating Shop Traffic

Chenoa what you are doing with SEO and social media is very important and I would keep on doing it if I were you.

But may I also suggest a slightly different approach to your photographs. As a viewer and potential buyer the only part of your photos that i am interested in is the item for sale. So I would fill more of the frame with that item.

In the graphite drawings of dinosaurs I would crop in on the image and lose the white and red border even if it meant losing part of the graphite landscape as well. But don't crop the dinosaur. Always leave it clearly recognizable.

The giclees are so dark I cannot fully see the image. Get rid of the white border on these as well and lighten up the resulting photo until they can be clearly seen.

Then work on getting your work seen on Etsy through the feeds and in treasuries. Join some teams that will support your efforts to market your own work and those of your team mates..

The photos look okay on pintrest and such but (especially with the illustrations) etsy pixelates them so it makes them harder to see

Re: SEO and Stimulating Shop Traffic

I used full size images to remedy the issue in the thumbnails. Is it better or is etsy's compression still causing trouble?

Re: SEO and Stimulating Shop Traffic

On the Other Side is the only one that is still a bit dark for me. The others are much easier to see and understand for me now. And I'm liking the drawings better as well. Zooming in on them made the images larger and easier to see especially in the thumbnails that Etsy uses so much of the time.

Had you thought about arranging your front page so that each type of item was grouped more or less together either in a row or in a column? That might also help the immediate visual impression of the shop.

What you have done with your photographs, though, really made what you were selling more immediately apparent. And in the feeds you only have a split second to pique someone's interest.

One the other side is a file of the actual piece, it is that dark, changing the brightness would mislead the client. All items are currently ordered by product type, so that it already done.

Products are easy because you can photo box them in 3 dimensions. The art is harder because you have to catch someones interest with the precise subject, since most of my items have a landscape element in them it makes them hard to see in listings. I am cropping the thumbnails pretty tight instead to compensate.

Re: SEO and Stimulating Shop Traffic

your titles and tags could use a serious overhaul.

try less specific phrases, like science jewelry, dinosaur keychain, geek necklace, egyptian print, etc

you need to use Phrases in the title, then repeat them in One tag.

one word tags=cloak of invisibility

Re: SEO and Stimulating Shop Traffic

Chenoa,

The SEO in your shop can be greatly improved and that would increase views considerably.

For example: Google uses the shop title for searches on Google Add relevant keywords to the shop title and remove your shop name which is not necessary, such as,
New shop title: Paleoart, Unusual Geek Gifts for Archaeologists

I used Google Adwords (FREE) Keyword Planner to look for appropriate keywords for your shop. Here is a short list of the keywords I found along the average number of monthly searches:

archaeology gifts 40
geek gifts 6600
geeky gifts 1300
gifts for archaeologists 140
gifts for dad 33100
gifts for geeks 1900
gifts for geeks and nerds 40
gifts for mom 40500
gifts for nerds 1000
gifts for science geeks 170
gifts for science teachers 140
paleo art 90
paleoart 260
unusual gifts 5400

You should also add relevant keywords to the section names. Google uses section names for searches on Google.

Using some of these keywords in the listing titles and tags will also help in getting found and see more on Etsy and on Google.

The most relevant pieces of information about the listing, such as: button or illustration should be at the beginning of the listing title. I highly recommend researching keywords to find 2 or 3 word keywords that shoppers use for the beginning of the listing title as the words "button" and "illustration" are too generic to bring in any targeted views.

With some keyword research, you can find more keywords that shoppers really use.

For promotion, find the places on the Internet where your target market frequents and become an active participant or advertiser, such as forums, blogs.

Instead of just posting your wares to social media sites, engage your followers and fans in your posts. Social media works much better if the strictly promotional posts are 1 in 10 or fewer.

Re: SEO and Stimulating Shop Traffic

The keywords, Prehistoric Art, might be good for the shop title as well.

The suggestions you received for the photos are good. Consider using photo editing software to lighten and brighten the images so that they look more appealing.

Re: SEO and Stimulating Shop Traffic

You may want to try using "dinosaur art" as a key word as well as some of the other suggestions. Your pictures would appeal to kids who are into dinosaurs as well as adults.
