Rush Prices Question

Hey everyone,
I was wondering how people priced rush custom work.
Do you have a standard increase that you add on or a percentage of the work? Do you always charge a rush-fee or only when you need to work 'over-time'?
I think of a rush fee as a price that I charge when I need to work into my free-time or when it impacts on the other jobs that I do. Does that sound fair?
I sell custom-written poetry so it will always take a couple of days because of re-drafting my original words but I offer rush pieces (due to last minute wedding needs or late birthday gifts etc). I've not had anyone ask for a super fast turnaround yet but I want to be prepared in case they do.
Hope everyone is doing well,
Vick.

Re: Rush Prices Question

That's about how I figure out my rush orders, on a "how much time are they needing this in" sort of way. Right now for example I have a girl ordering place cards for her wedding, on my listing it states that I need the confirmed information at least 3 weeks before the wedding. She was unable to make that happen and I am only going to be getting her info a week from her wedding. I am spending my weekend working on her order, so I charged her a rush fee accordingly and probably would have made it less had I had 2 weeks to work with, etc. On my listing I just have "Rush orders are available, please contact for pricing" That way I can figure out what works best for that order, since all custom orders are different!

Re: Rush Prices Question

That's a really good point, definitely smart to vary the pricing based on just how rushed it is.
Thanks so much.

Re: Rush Prices Question

Thank you Amy - awesome to hear other people's opinions. I worry about pricing too much and I had only been considering 10/20% so it's great to hear you think I can go much higher than that. I'll do some more figures and see where I end up!
