Requesting customer phone number automatically

Royal Mail are very expensive on postal charges when sending overseas, and unless I am sending a small parcel it is much cheaper to send by courier.
Some couriers require a telephone number for the delivery address.
I have just amended my thank you message to include a note informing my customer that their item may be sent by courier and that they require a contact phone number.

Is there a way to include this request for a contact phone number at check out stage, rather than it being in the thank you message or emailing afterwards?

I think you should inform your customers when they order or when you are in contact with them while arranging a custom order. They might not even see your note in the 'thank you' message.

I always send a more personalised thank you message, as well as the default one anyway, so I shall stick to doing this.

I just thought it would be handy as I could get parcels out quicker if there is a time difference between myself and my customer.

Yes I do that too!
I send a short message after the purchase to ask for the telephone number.
Most of the time the buyers reply without a problem.

I know it might get overlooked easily but maybe you could include it in your descriptions?
