Question about old "open order"

This is sort of embarrassing, but I just noticed that I have an open "order" - a shipping upgrade from February. The order was shipped, but I never marked the upgrade as shipped, now it shows as an open order. I would like to get rid of the open order status, but if I mark it shipped, it will automatically send the buyer an email - I don't want to do that. Any suggestions?

Re: Question about old "open order"

I don't think there's any way to mark an item as shipped and not send the automatic email. Here's the help page on how "mark as shipped" works: https://www.etsy.com/help/article/374

If it was a good transaction, I'd probably go ahead and mark it as shipped and write a personal note to the buyer in the automatic email. I'd say something like --"Sorry I forgot to mark this as shipped back in February. Hope you're enjoying your [item]!" I think most of the people who shop on Etsy realize that we're human and occasionally make some mistakes.

Re: Question about old "open order"

A few weeks back I was on the receiving end of a similar situation. All I can say is that when I received a notice that my items were on their way I was confused. I immediately thought that the shop owner had made a mistake and was sending a duplicate item, so, thinking I was doing her a favor, I contacted her. She seemed to take it very lightly and said it was all right, she hoped I was enjoying the item I already received. No explanation or apology. I do not remember her words, but it was done in such a manner, that for some reason I felt put off. I know I will not visit her shop again.

I must add that I am not picky, I have had shops send me the wrong item, I have had shops delay shipping, etc., etc., but they have always been gracious and explained the mishap. I continue to go back to those shops.

So, maybe it would be a good idea to let your customer know before hand that she will receive a notice about her item being shipped to her. I know I would have appreciated being notified before hand.

Good luck to you.

Re: Question about old "open order"

IF you send a note to support@etsy.com they can mark the item as shipped without a shipping notice being sent,.

Re: Question about old "open order"

That's good to know CG! I've had that happen, not on here but with my paypal account where I noticed an old order wasn't marked shipped yet. Even if you mark it shipped, if the buyer asks, you can just say you forgot to check the box. I think the buyer will understand since they already have their item.

Re: Question about old "open order"

You could also just be in touch with the customer and let them know that the shipping upgrade will need to be 'marked as shipped' so they might get some fan mail through Etsy.

I don't think that's weird, but I'd rather get the explanation email from you first.

Agree with sending a short explanation note, stating you're doing 'shop housecleaning' so-to-speak and noticed this particular item was still open, that you're closing it, and just wanted to let her know so as not to confuse her.
