Promoting others- etiquette?

I am just learning the process of promotion, FB page for shop etc. I do like to 'share' great shops/artists/blogs and now just learing to fine tune that. If I promote your shop/blog what is the etiquette? Do you want to know and have a link? What is the best way to let you know?
What are the general steps one takes? Can I just share and let you know or do I ask you first?

Silly questions I know, but I am not as social media savvy as I'd like to be.
Thanks

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

Hi Jem,

If you were to promote my shop I would be delighted and you do not need to ask me first. However being promoted is a positive thing and I would want to return the favor so it would be good etiquette to send a 'conversation' to me through Etsy so I was aware of the promotion and could favor you back. A link would make jumping to your post quicker and easier!

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I want to be asked first (even though I will say yes and it is nice of you to promote me). I assume you need to use my pictures and you need my permission for that.
But not many sellers think like me. Most will be happy with any free publicity, even if their pictures are being used without permission.
But, technically/legally you have to ask.
I hope that helps.

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

BeaG-in the past I just share the link to a shop-which means if they follow it -it goes directly to the shop. But I do see where blogging would need permission for photos.

Black Crow-yes I think its wonderful you would share the favor of promoting!

All good advice so far-thank you

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I have no problem when someone links to one of my items in a blog. I'm always grateful.

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I would say you can just share and then send an Etsy convo with a link. I can't think of any reason someone would decline a feature *unless* the featuring blog has questionable/offensive content that a shop might not want to be associated with.

I'm guessing that's not the case here :)

You'll probably be featured yourself as a thank you!

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I would be thrilled and you probably don't need to ask, although I'd like to be notified so I can see it.

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I think its awesome to promote others! I would definitely send them a quick convo just to say that you did, maybe in turn if they really like your shop, they'll turn around and promote yours too!

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

Does it still count as using the person's photos if you just a post a link and an image pops up from the link?

Usually when I post a link on my facebook page to another person's product, Facebook immediately gives it a thumbnail.

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

When I'm in a blog I like to know so I can read it.
I like to thank the person for promoting me too and maybe help/promote them in the future.

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

Personally, I'd be very happy if you wrote about me in some way. I don't have to be asked, but I'd like a convo to let me know so I can see it. It wouldn't be spam to me, although I think some few people might believe so.

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I am part of a very large group of sellers who favor and heart each others products on a daily basis. so if you heart me, I will heart you back.

I am all for helping promote and network with each other ;)

Itrhymeswithorange, do you buy from eachother too? Otherwise it makes no sense whatsoever to me. Empty views, empty hearts...
You want to promote your products to your target market (= the people most likely to buy your products).

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I have found in the past that hearting items does get some promoting done. I have had at least one sale from someone hearting my item and someone else who follows them seeing it. I believe this was the case.

Ok-maybe I will start with all the kind people above responding as my project for promoting and I thank you all for your replies.

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I think most people will thank you for promoting them. Free publicity is awesome. ;) I'm protective of my photos, but I'm okay with people using them to promote me, if everything's credited and such. And if I'm featured on a blog, I appreciate a link in my inbox. :)

I think the worst case scenario here is the shop owner asks you to take the post (or their photos) down, you do, no harm done.

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I would welcome any free publicity and love a convo or email that would let know so I could check it out and respond.

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

generally i think a conversation first...so you can provide links to where you are promoting....so i can see it. if its promoting my store i would be very unlikely to say no :) lol

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I usually ask first if I am featuring someone on my blog. But not with Facebook. If someone has a like button on their shop or shop blog, then they have basically given permission to share.

For me, I don't mind any free promotion. If I have objections later, I can always ask to be removed. So far this hasn't happened.

Re: Promoting others- etiquette?

I ask first too! And then usually the shop will give me a coupon code to share which makes the promotion even better for both parties!
