Prices in USD or GBP?

Hi! I was listing some new items when a thought struck me- most of Etsy viewers are US-based, so would browsers prefer to have prices in dollars, rather than pounds?

My GBP prices are nice, round numbers, but they seem to be not quite rounded in USD, so I wonder if this will turn people off?

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

I asked this in the Business Topics a while ago, before I started listing and the response I got was that generally it's easier to stay in your own currency, there are lots of GBP or Euro sellers aswell as USD and the buyers will see the price in their own currency anyway, they will accept that the number is round for you and not mind all that much about the conversion. As a seller from UK I've put my prices in GBP, makes it easier to regulate regular profits etc and it's not an issue for international buyers.

It's your choice though, these are just my thoughts based on what others have advised me :)

Oh, forgot to mention that I'd really be interested in the opinions of people from the US :)

As a US seller/buyer it makes no difference to me if your prices are in British pounds. The conversion to US dollars is right under the British price. Having the price end in an odd number of change also doesn't make a difference to me.

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

I have my prices set to USD even though I'm in Ireland - I don't know, I just started that way and it stuck; I may change it...

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

I did the same as Rosemary, and now whenever I list an item I convert the price from euro to usd. When started listing it hasn't even crossed my mind to list in euro because I've read that most buyers are from USA. Sometimes we do things without thinging and Amanda I'm happy you started this tread!

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

I'm based in UK and have tried both - prices in GBP and USD. Changing prices to GBP didn't make any difference to my customers ( half of which are American customers) but made it HUGELY easier for me, paperwork-wise. Plus, it brought a kind of stability and peace into my business.

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

Amanda,

Please don't worry about the fact the your prices in $USD aren't rounded nicely. When I'm shopping, I look at the total price (item price plus shipping) estimate and make my purchase based on that figure.

If its easier for you to list and sell in GBP then go for it!

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

Funny but today I was also thinking about changing listings to my own currency-Canadian. I'm taking a hit with PayPal simply because they are trading well below par even though the dollar is at par.
I don't think it will make much of a difference for buyers just simplify things for me!

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

As a US buyer, I don't really care. The only thing that might stop me from buying from someone outside of the US is the shipping cost. I don't really care if the price is a nice round number or not.

Thanks for the input- I guess I'll keep it in GBP, it would simplify everything :)

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

Yes as a buyer I don't mind as long as the currency is converted right there for me, which it is! I think it's ok to keep it in GBP.

:)

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

I was wondering this as well. The reason I'm holding off for now is that $25US equals about $30 New Zealand & the $30NZD would be in big with the $25USD underneath in small. I think people would just see the higher number first & be turned off. But with GBP it might work for you since $25 is about 13GBP & people will be drawn to lower number in big first.

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

I don't think it matters. I have my account in USD, but am based in Kenya and find that my customers are from around the world. . . The automatic conversion in preferred currency is helpful to all. As a shopper I am not bothered by 'uneven' figures at all.

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

I was first selling in USD, but then decided to change to Euro and am still selling as much of even more. It also makes pricing a lot easier for me especially with custom work when I don't have to worry about the exchange rates. Also bookkeeping is much simpler, when I don't have to convert all my receipts.

When I buy from Etsy, or on-line in general, it doesn't matter to me which currency the prices are in.

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

Stephanie that is quite a thought and I think you are so sharp to see it like that people look at the price first. Also Amanda people in the Uk may like to see it in pounds and order because of that. You might atract more local buyers that way cut down on shipping cost too.

Re: Prices in USD or GBP?

Being in Switzerland I've always thought that it didn't make sense to have prices in Swiss Francs as I almost never sell to Swiss based customers. Plus when I opened my first Paypal account, I did it in USD so I had less fees keeping everything in USD.
