Price Increase

I'm thinking about increasing my prices for 2014. Can you guys take a look at my shop and let me know if bumping my regular sized books from $20 to $25 or $30 sounds insane? I had a really busy holiday but sales have slowed down, so I'm a little scared.

What do you think?

Eileen

Re: Price Increase

Definitely do it! I think you are underpriced right now, and besides, each time I increase my prices, I only get more sales ;)

Re: Price Increase

I would do what I do. Bump them up for a few weeks and see what happens. If it isn't working then do a sale. Sometimes people will buy from you if you have a sale. I'm not saying that it is going to work. Sometimes when I up my prices it works, other times it doesn't. It depends on the person.

Re: Price Increase

I pay $28 for sketchbooks that size at Barnes and Noble. You should do $25 without a doubt maybe even a bit higher.

Re: Price Increase

By the way, you should get more than B&N, but buyers factor in shipping.

Re: Price Increase

Eileen and Malgo,
Are you covering costs, overhead, paying yourself at a decent wage?
There is a formula floating around the threads, but from memory it's expenses + hourly wage = wholesale. Then wholesale x 2 = retail.
I just raised mine this weekend and my shop has been dead since. But it's okay, it will pick up again. But until then I'm working on getting all of my images fresh, which will take me a while at the rate I'm going, that and sick kids.

Re: Price Increase

If you want to raise your prices, that's great. Go right ahead! I only question if you need to raise your prices quite so dramatically all at once. Over the span of several years I've raised my prices significantly, but I've never raised prices (on a $15-$20 item) more than $1 at a time. I always felt that no one would really notice a $.50 or $1 increase...or if they did, it wouldn't matter. Five dollars seems a hefty increase all at once and might be a bit offsetting to customers if they are returning or are familiar with your prices.

Most repeat customers, if they like your product, will certainly continue to buy. Out of my MANY repeat customers, I did have one recently express a bit of outrage when she compared my current prices to when she purchased 2 years ago. I just told her, sorry, but yes, I've increased my prices and still have more business than I can handle (during the Christmas season, anyway)! Needless to say, she didn't make another purchase. :)

Re: Price Increase

Pricing is always such a tough thing to determine. There are many formulas out there, but it's hard to imagine our products are worth the cost. I actually use an inventory program called craftybase (http://craftybase.com/ref/938e46b5) which also provides pricing for finished projects. When I first started using it, I realized that I was way underpricing my work. I started pricing them more realistically and actually saw an increase in sales.

The take home for me was the realization that my target market will pay a reasonable price for my work. What a realization for a maker!

A note about sales: I've done sales a number of times and find that they don't work on etsy. Those same folks that find my work and love it will buy it at full price. They aren't discount shoppers.

Good luck!

Re: Price Increase

I would go for it, too. I have increased my price awhile ago before and had a success with it. With a higher price, I believe that customers see the true value in my items. Good luck!

Re: Price Increase

I would go for it! hand made sketchbooks? I wouldn't bat an eye at those being around $30.

You can try to increase a few at a time, incrementally. Or just go for it, whatever feels good.
