🦁👑🔥🌕🧙‍♂️☘️🌷🌼🌱⚖️⚗️
Botanical name: Heimia salicifolia

Other names: Sinicuiche, Sun Opener, Sinicuichi

Family: Lythraceae

Distribution: Mexico, South America

ORIGIN : MEXICO
No information is available concerning the prehistoric use of Heimia salicifolia. It is possible that the plant was associated with the cult of Xochipilli, the Aztec god of spring and desire. During the 19th century, the plant was a recommended treatment for syphilis.

If often has been (incorrectly) assumed that the plant was named for the renowned Altasian mycologist Roger Heim. However, the genus Heimia, which consists of just three species, was actually named for Ernst Ludwig Heim (1747-1834), a physician from Berlin who introduced Alexander von Humboldt to botany.

TRADITIONAL USE: Gordon Wasson linked Sinicuichi to the Aztec god of spring and desire, Xochipilli. Naturalistic flower elements that appear on the legendary Aztec statue of Xochipilli have always been assumed to be the flora of sinicuiche. Although no documented proof is available regarding its ritual use, anecdotal evidence does show that it has been used in fertility ceremonies, as well as spiritual cleansing rituals said to rid one of evil and ward away dark spirits (Wasson 1974).

There is no verifiable evidence of Sinicuichi being used in prehistoric Mexico. Wasson’s hypothesis connecting the plant to Xochipilli has never been substantiated and is tenuous at best. Modern accounts of H. salicifolia use can be traced back to the 1800s, when the indigenous Indians throughout Mexico used a decoction of the flowers, leaves, branches, and roots to treat the symptoms of syphilis. J.B. Calderon first reported its hallucinogenic effects in 1896 while investigating the medicinal folk remedies of Mexico (Theatrum Botanicum 2004).

The popular name, Sinicuiche, is used for both the plant and the drink that is made from the plant. The plant also goes by folk names including anchinol, chapuzina, escoba del rio, flor de San Francisco, granadillo, hanchinoli, hierba de San Francisco, jara, quiebra yugo, and xonoxhilli, among many others. In reference to the drink, the name sinicuiche refers to the Mexican “magical drink which causes oblivion,” that was immortalized by German supernatural fiction author Hanns Heinz Ewers in his tome The Blue Indians (translated to English from its native title, Die blauen Indianer) (Graham 1997).

holy water is used frequently in rites of blessing and exorcism, and the water for baptism is always sanctified with a special blessing.

Throughout the centuries, there have been many springs of water that have been believed by members of the Orthodox Church to be miraculous. Some still flow to this day, such as the one at Pochaev Lavra in Ukraine, and the Life-Giving Spring of the Theotokos in Constantinople (commemorated annually with the blessing of holy water on Bright Friday).

Although Eastern Orthodox do not normally bless themselves with holy water upon entering a church like Catholics do, a quantity of holy water is typically kept in a font placed in the narthex (entrance) of the church, where it is available for anyone who would like to take some of it home with them. It is customary for Orthodox to drink holy water, to use it in their cooking and to sprinkle their houses with it.

Often, when objects are blessed in the church (such as the palms on Palm Sunday, Icons or sacred vessels) the blessing is completed by a triple sprinkling with holy water using the words, "This (name of item) is blessed by the sprinkling of this holy water, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

Holy water is sometimes sprinkled on items or people when they are blessed outside the church building, as part of the prayers of blessing. For instance, in Alaska, the fishing boats are sprinkled with holy water at the start of the fishing season as the priest prays for the crews' safety and success. Some Catholics also have a priest bless their cars or homes with holy water as a way of invoking God's blessing and protection.
