Please help with Packaging

Hey guys. I need help with my packaging.

I make necklaces using 1mm gold filled chain. Its super delicate. So I package it in a small jewelry box 3 1/16 x 2 1/8 with 2 pieces of cotton filler. I laying the charms on the 2nd layer and lay the chain over the cotton to rest on the bottom of the box. The 2nd piece of cotton rests on top. The 2 cotton pieces fill the box - then I secure it with string and berries.

The box is secured as tightly as possible in a padded envelope for shipping.

Well - I thought this was working. But recently I had a customer give feedback as such:

"Fast delivery and nice packaging. Item arrived as described. Only minor criticism is that the necklace was pretty tangled - maybe they can work on internal packaging to prevent that from happening in the future. I would purchase from this store again - no question."

Is there a better way to secure the chain behind the cotton fill? Obviously I don't want to tape it and leave residue on the chain. Would love what other jewelers use, ideas and thoughts.

Thank you!

I think the best way is to use a jewelry padding. The padding has 2 cuts at the top where you can secure the chain without having to use any tape.
If you want to do it yourself you may try with foam, which is thick and firm, allowing you to cut the spaces for the chain.
I found this site where they sell it, it's in the UK, although you might find it in any diy store near you: http://www.twfoam.co.uk/

I'm using some boxes that I bought some time ago, and they came with the padding, but I'm planning on doing them myself, so I'll definately want to try the foam.

I've also found this type of foam on Etsy, which I think it's perfect!

Happy packaging!

The best -and cheapest- way I've found to keep chains from tangling:

Cut a some 3" sections from a disposable plastic straw, slip them over the chain before closing the clasp.

For traveling, I cut the straws in half, then pack.

What about a piece of tagboard/posterboard with slits cut in the top and bottom and wrap your chain around the card?
