Photo help please!

Hi Everyone! We need a little help with setting out our shop. At the moment we are presenting our prints with no backgrounds, the main picture being just a close up of the art. However, soon we are going to start selling cards and tags and wrapping paper and such, which will have to be photgraphed with gothic type backgrounds and props (a bit like damnfrenchdesserts awesome shop!).

Should we...

a) have all our large prints as close ups (like they are now) and have all our smaller prints and cards photographs in nice settings.

b) photograph all our work in settings with old antique frames even though they will be sold unframed (Do people dislike seeing an item framed in an Etsy shop when you can only buy unframed?).

c) Have every 'main image' as a close up of the design, and following images in nice settings.

I get the feeling our shop is not weird and victorian looking enough.

Any advice would would be amazing...thanks everyone :)

Re: Photo help please!

This is just my feeling on this. I like having the main image with only the art, as it is now. This is great for being featured in treasuries. Next feature it in your nice setting, to give it atmosphere. Last show it framed. I think that helps for people to see how it could look on their walls, assist their imagination. :) Make it very clear that framing isn't available if it isn't.

Best luck! Your shop already looks amazing!

Re: Photo help please!

I love the idea of having one of the pics framed, it shows the buyer what the item might look like framed in their house/office etc. I agree that you need to make it very clear that the prints won't come framed.

I recently blogged about this too: http://intheori.blogspot.com/2011/03/part-1-improving-your-photos-on-etsy.html

O and very cool shop! I think the look/theme of your store would work very well with the prints photographed in frames!

Re: Photo help please!

I would not do choice B if you are selling them unframed... people often do not read descriptions well and you will be buying yourself a ton of difficulty as folks will be expecting a frame :)

I like option C, but I would experiment and see what gets the most views. It would be great if each listing had a mix of your suggestions and then if you find one certain style brings in more views or sales, you can stick with that (BUT you'll also have all the other styles to show people to really "seal the deal" and use for marketing)
