Overall Etsy Profits

My husband recently asked me how much etsy makes off my store in a given year. I went back and looked for last year and I was really surprised. I suppose I knew this at tax time... but it didn't really register.

When looking at my total sales figure, etsy "made" 21% (between listing fees and sales fees). Seems like a pretty good profit to me! For this year, I'm at about 22.5%, so far. I'm not really complaining. Etsy is a wonderful platform to sell my items. But if I knew I was going to be doing this for many years, I would certainly want to consider my own website...

I was curious how others stack up.

Um, check your math, dear. Etsy is taking twenty cents when you list and/or renew. When the item sells, they take 3.5%.
At most, its less than 5%.

I think you multiplyed instead of divided. I had to do it a couple of times too {@..@} and don't do math under stress, haha!

Unless you have lower cost items and renew them frequently. If that's the case, you will want to re-think that strategy and work on other ways to get found in Search. (Haven't looked at your SEO, so I can't say, but renewing doesn't do the job most of the time.)

Re: Overall Etsy Profits

Did you factor in the fact that shipping charges aren't included in revenue stats? Does the 21% include shipping labels?

Re: Overall Etsy Profits

yup, you might be including shipping.

Etsy doesn't include shipping revenue in our shop stats, but it is included in your bill if you use Etsy's Shipping Labels ( which we do exclusively), so it looks like they take about 10% more from us than they do.

21% is very high. We pay Etsy about 7-8%, including direct checkout fees and search ads.

Re: Overall Etsy Profits

duh! I feel so stupid. I forgot that etsy includes the shipping labels in the bill!!! Thanks, all, for clarifying things for me. It's so good to know I'm not paying 20%. :)

Re: Overall Etsy Profits

I like Etsy a lot better than other sights. I used to sell digital art on cafepress, and I only got to keep 10%. It was fun, but seemed like a waist of time, so I'm really glad I discovered Etsy.

Re: Overall Etsy Profits

My spreadsheet shows that over the past 5 years, Etsy gets between 5% and 6% of the selling price.
