Opinions Please!

I am in the process updating all of my pictures in my shop. I want to use a model for my wearable items in my shop.

I was wondering if I should make the exact same item or create a general item for the model to wear. For example, I would make a plain solid color headband for the model to wear then post that picture as the last of the five pictures.

Re: Opinions Please!

If you retake your photos, try to keep a coherent background going. Try and make sure every product is photographed in the same place. I like white backgrounds - they remove all distractions from the product, and are also more likely to make it to the front page - that's not something EVERYONE cares about, but I do.

One thing I will state though is that in some countries it's against the law to sell pierced goods that have already been worn for hygiene reasons. I don't believe Etsy's T&C have anything around that, but international customers might be wary. In this case, I'd have only one pair of earrings that are the same size and shape as all your others and have them modeled, but use it as a secondary picture rather than the first, so that people can see the size and shape when worn. Alternatively, you could use the same earrings but change the backs after they've been worn, or make a second, identical pair to be photographed.

It might seem like a lot of trouble, but pre-worn earrings and other pierced goods can be very off-putting to some people, especially those with sensitive ears.

Yea I completely understand. I would never sell something that has been worn by someone else. Eww.
So it would be ok to showcase the same size earring but just a solid color? It would not seem confusing.

Re: Opinions Please!

Many shops show their items on a mannequin or doll instead of a model. Maybe you could find one of the hair mannequins they use for beauty schools at a beauty supply store. If you're going to use a model, do as Kim suggested and use earrings and hair clips that are similar in size and shape, not the actual ones you're selling. I didn't know it's actually illegal in some places, I just wouldn't want to buy earrings that had been worn by someone else so I've never used a model. (I've always hung my earrings on the edge of a bowl or glass, but this can't be done with post style ones.) I feel the same way about hair accessories and hats too.

The white/light backgrounds are more popular for a reason, they tend to look more professional. Think about when you go shopping online- most of the major online retailers use the white backgrounds too. The white background shows off the item without being distracting. It's pretty cheap and easy to get a white background, and you can use fotofuze to make it brighter. My views did improve when I started using it for my shop.

Re: Opinions Please!

I think having a solid-colored item to model would be great. It would allow people to see the size on a person but would keep you from having to take so many photos.

Personally, I way prefer real life models. Not a fan of a mannequin for jewelry, etc.

Re: Opinions Please!

It wouldn't be confusing to me, but you might want to just mention in the listing that the modelled piece in the final picture is an example of size and shape, and not the product they will receive.

Re: Opinions Please!

I would love to find a mannequin! Thank you everyone!

The next step is to figure out how to make a white background for a model/mannequin.
