Off to pet some yarn

I know that sounds strange but you who work with fiber know what I mean. lol
I can order all I want online but sometimes you just gotta see and feel what your buying.
Lets just hope I can stick somewhat close to my list. :)
What supplies do you like to buy in person vs online?

Re: Off to pet some yarn

That's funny. I only started crocheting last winter and when I'm in the yarn aisle I pet it too. :)

Re: Off to pet some yarn

I personally like to buy paper supplies in person rather than through the internet. That way I can feel the texture and weight and see the exact color. :)

Re: Off to pet some yarn

I have not made it to buying yarn online yet! I love petting, it's how I choose what I want. I could spend hours on the yarn aisle...

Re: Off to pet some yarn

Every time I go to Jo-Ann's intending to buy one or two skeins of yarn for a project, I end up walking out with one of their HUGE bags full of yarn. It is an addiction.

I've never bought yarn online, either. I agree, some things you just have to do in person.

Re: Off to pet some yarn

I've made the mistake all too often of buying unknown materials (beads, charms, fabric, even clothes!) online without seeing it in person first. I get drawn in by good photography and great prices. And more than half of the time I'm really disappointed in what I receive!

If I'm buying something that's standardized, like 22 gauge, round, half hard, sterling silver wire, I know exactly what I'm getting and can often find deals online that I can't find locally. But with beads, and such, If I haven't already seen it, I know I might get burned online, so I often pay a little more to buy in person.

It's a bummer too, b/c sometimes I buy supplies on Etsy and the quality just isn't very good, but I feel like I can't complain b/c, you know, we're the Etsy family... sigh. Such are the perils of buying online.

Re: Off to pet some yarn

Hello, my name is Felicia, and I am a yarn addict.

Yarn addiction is a serious problem affecting thousands of knitters and crocheters all over the world. There is no known cure for yarn addiction, and those diagnosed are plagued with closets full of unused skeins and half-finished projects.

Re: Off to pet some yarn

To answer your question, I buy all of my yarn in person. When I can see and feel the yarn I have a much better idea of what I want to make with it.

Re: Off to pet some yarn

In the past 4 years I have finally limited myself to two types of yarn... so I can and will order it on-line. Unfortunately, I too will pet yarn at the store and be very tempted to break budget and purchase based on texture, softness and color. (And yes, I have gallon baggies full of impulse yarn purchases).
We buy all of our wood in person so we can pick through for pieces with interesting grain.

Re: Off to pet some yarn

I buy almost everything in person, except fold over elastic, I found a great seller here that ships fast and great price.

I don't sell enough to buy large quantities for a discount, but drive by my two favorite stores that sell yarn every day, and they have coupons! And I get to feel them, bonus!!

Re: Off to pet some yarn

I only buy sewing and embroidery thread in person since I want it to match my fabric perfectly.

Yarn, I have had really good luck with knitpicks(online) but I have deliberately avoided yarn stores since I have a problem lol. I actually have a stash of over 50 skeins that I'm slowly whittling down.

When petting yarn, am I the only one that touches their face with it lol?

Re: Off to pet some yarn

When I buy yarn to make something to sell, I usually buy from the same company online, as I already know what their yarn looks and feels like. For myself, I usually like to dive into yarn stores and pick out fun colors and fibers to play with. I think I'll be making a trip to pet yarn this week, as my local yarn shop will be moving and everything is 50% off!!

Re: Off to pet some yarn

I love buying yarn...love touching & feeling, but most of the time I order online, as I pretty only much knit with Wollmeise, though I have been to the bricks & mortar shop in Germany a couple of times, which was heavenly.

As a sewer, I much prefer buying in person...the tie silks I buy are all from a mill shop a few miles from me, so I shop there about once a week. For fabrics for the OOAK Barbies I do, again, I prefer shopping in person, as it's so hard to get a feel for the weight & quality of a fabric online.

Re: Off to pet some yarn

I buy all of my yarn in person, too! I've only purchased a few handspun skeins online, after recommendations from friends!

Re: Off to pet some yarn

You should see how much yarn I have... it's ridiculous. I think it's the real reason I started my shop... to pay for my habit.

Re: Off to pet some yarn

I do that at my LYS all the time. But certain things I will just buy online when it's on a good enough sale. One yarn I never buy online is my favorite, Malabrigo. I am afraid the colors may be off.

Re: Off to pet some yarn

I'm back and pretty happy I stuck to my budget. I purchased 21 skeins and 20 were on my list. 2 of those were on clearance so still in line. I did run into a lady who asked me to help her pick out yarn to make a scarf. She thought I was going to make one pretty big project with my cart full of yarn but I explained about my Etsy shop. She was so impressed. She couldn't believe I could have a successful online business selling crochet items. :)
