Odd problem with photo

I was reading a thread about the best aspect ratio for photos. One person said that she uses a square (1:1) aspect ratio. Since I like square photos, I tried it but no matter what size I made the file I always got off-white space to the left and right of the photo. I even tried taking a photo from another shop that could be displayed as a square, blacking it out, posting and still wasn't displayed as a square in my shop despite the fact that was in the original shop.

Anyone have any experience with this? Or any thoughts on best aspect ratio?

Re: Odd problem with photo

Hi Richard,

I looked up Etsy's guide to photos and it said you want to have at least 570 pixels wide for photos, although this other article in Help states that photos should be "between 800-1000 pixels wide, but the height can vary. Images more than 1000 pixels wide may not upload correctly".

So I don't necessarily post my photos based on aspect ratio, but rather pixel size. I don't know if that helps or not but there is more info in the link. Good luck!

Re: Odd problem with photo

The gallery view (like when you search) has a slightly rectangular aspect ratio. Luckily when you set up a listing you can zoom/alter the way the main listing photo appears in gallery results, so as long as your image is wider than 570, you can zoom in a bit or move it up or down to crop the right part of the image.
