October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Hey everyone, I'd love to get some direction on how to list items for next month's Breast Cancer Awareness. I remember last year there was a big push for the pink items and I know listing any charitable item has extra rules so can you tell me what I need to do to be able to list these items?

I do want to list a couple items and donate some of the sale to one of the charities, like the Susan G Komen foundation would be a good example.

Do I need to register with the charity? Do I need to add anything special to my listing descriptions? Are there certain tags that are commonly used for these listings?

I want to participate this year. This is a great cause and I would love if anyone has participated in previous years to give us newer sellers some guidance on how to do this properly. Admin is very welcome to join this discussion to help us stay within the TOUs.

Thanks!

I believe you are supposed to gain the charity's approval if you are planning to use their name in your description... "I will be donating a portion of the proceeds from this product to >>>>>". Personally though I don't find saying that you'll be donating a portion of the proceeds to entice buyers to purchase. I do donate to various charities just because I want to but I don't find it necessary to advertise that I am... I just keep it a personal deed : )

Re: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

No it doesn't but you do have to list it somewhere if the money is coming directly from your revenue.

I give 50% to World Vision, but I have to let the customers know their money goes towards WV, because it is tax deductible. Also, your customers are allowed to ask for your donations recipt to prove the money was given on their behalf.

It's good to register with the charity because they might advertise a little for you (if you have a previous history of giving with them).

Yes, it is in Etsy's rules that you need to contact the charity. However, just an FYI that Susan G. Komen foundation will deny your request. I tried last year and I know others that have tried. They say that too many shops want to do it so it is too much to manage.

It's always pink. Pink ribbons, and such.

Re: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This is such great info, thank you so much everyone. I will look into this. Pink is such a big part of my shop and I want to do it more for the promotion but to participate in an important cause.

And with tagging, I was thinking about treasuries. Is there a certain tag people use? I bet we will see some pink treasuries coming next month. :-)

Re: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I should have asked, has anyone found success at getting registered with a charity regarding breast cancer? I was wondering if anyone has had experience doing this in years past. Thanks!

I want to donate the proceeds to a charity, but how should I go about it? Any ideas, and any ideas about how I should word the description?

I'd appreciate any help you can give me! Lisa

Re: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

My heart is with anyone going through cancer. The most important thing for a cancer patient to do is gain their own awareness. The US hides many cancer cures and remedies and profits HUGELY HUGELY HUGELY off of cancer patients. It is disgraceful. I don't know what the heck these cancer charities do, probably send more money to big pharma to try and create that magic pill... but that's not where the cure is. It's in MICRO NUTRIENTS, also known as vitamins and minerals. Not saying this works for everybody, but it has worked for most of the people I've heard about and talked to.
One of the main things that cancer cells do is send out an enzyme that eats through collagen so the cell can break loose and travel all over the body. To remedy this, it's good to know that Vitamin C builds collagen. Our body does not make vitamin C and it is a necessary component of collagen. The FDA says we need 300 mg or something like that, when in reality our bodies could use about 3000 mg, and if you have cancer 5000 mg or 5Grams is even better. I'm speaking from much research and study in Naturopathy, not from personal experience. I do take 2 Grams of vitamin C daily and it does only good things for me.

Big pharma is a corporation that irritates me more than any other and cancer is a disease that really gets me thinking so I wanted to share my 2 cents. I know everyone here has their heart in the right place and I think it's wonderful to donate to charities, just try to fully understand that charity and the cause they are supporting.

Re: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

as a breast cancer survivor i totally agree with the idea of helping people become more aware of how they can be proactive about being diagnosed and what they can do to try for prevention but the whole pink thing really gets to me and i can't help but feel that there are a lot of companies jumping on the pink bandwagon that are benefitting more than any charity--some companies that brag about donating to the Komen fund do indeed donate but the percentage is less than 1%!!!

there are many, many cancers and many illnesses and many handicaps out there. in my mind it would be nice if October were simply cancer awareness month...;-)

Have any of you registered with a charity? Do you have a link?

I really want to do this but can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone. Help please!

Re: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I have to say I'm quite disappointed. I've asked all over.

I asked here. I asked in the forums and no one will help me.

Nevermind. I tried. I really did. I wanted to help this awesome cause but I guess I can't. Oh well. :-(
