My best advice for a new seller is to read, read, read the forums to pick up various tidbits of info. There is so much information that it can be overwhelming at first so just go one step at a time and learn as you go.
Also, find your target audience and market directly to those people. I did that via Facebook and the vast majority of my sales now come from there. There are lots of ways to promote your shop however, and what works for one shop might not work for another. You just need to do a little experimenting to see what brings you the most traffic.
The reality, for most of us on Etsy, is that patience is a must. I find that keeping busy creating new items not only helps keep my shop full but also helps keep me motivated between sales.
