Nervous about listing fees

I know it sounds silly, but i'm nervous every time I add a new listing.

I haven't had any sales yet and i'm trying to be patient. I see a lot of people suggest having lot's of items in the store (makes perfect sense) but I'm so worried i'll end up spending a fortune listing items that will never sell.

Anybody else have these worries when they first started?

Re: Nervous about listing fees

You never know until you list! I know it's a small investment and it adds up, but someone could love your product! Stop being shy and dive right in! You can do it :) you made the product for a reason, right?! ;)

Re: Nervous about listing fees

Look at it this way: How many items do you need to sell per month to make up for your monthly listing fees? Take that number and make it your goal. Even if it's just one item, make it your goal to sell at least one item to make up for your listing fees. Nothing to be afraid of; instead of fearing, turn that into motivation to build your shop bigger and better to ensure the sales you need to make up for your expenses!

Re: Nervous about listing fees

Thanks Kelly. That's so very true. I'm usually a risk taker, but i'm horribly nervous about raking up listing fees and making no sales. I think it's a humiliation thing maybe? I want my family to be proud and I know hubby would be concerned if I'm spending $$$ on listing and making nothing back.

Re: Nervous about listing fees

When I first started I decided on a $20 limit (100 items!)
$3 in I made my first sale, so it made it all worth it. I would set a limit, and work your butt off promoting the items you have and perfecting SEO! SEO is always more important than the number of items listed anyway!

Re: Nervous about listing fees

"I know hubby would be concerned if I'm spending $$$ on listing and making nothing back."

Something to keep in mind also is that all business ventures need startup money. A piece of advice I was given that keeps my fears, worries, and concerns in check is that it takes most businesses three years to be profitable. Three years! Obviously it doesn't have to be that way for a small shop on Etsy with little overhead (you don't have to pay rent for a brick and mortar storefront, or electricity for that storefront!), but when I get discouraged I remember that it takes money and time (and hard work!) to turn a profit, but if you put in what you want to get out it'll be worth it. For the new year I set a goal for myself to produce $500 in product each month; previously I was usually averaging around $250 in product per month, so this goal was a little scary. The real scary part was watching my expenses skyrocket in order to have the materials to meet my new production goals! I've been spending a LOT more money each month than I did before this goal, but it's a risk I'm willing to take in an effort to grow my business. Shooting for the stars is risky--you might miss! But you can't reach the sky if you're afraid to leave the ground.

I like your shop, I like your products, I think there's a viable market for what you have to offer. You just have to stick to it, be confident in your products (and in yourself!), and shoot for the stars :)

Re: Nervous about listing fees

Great advice ladies, thank you so much xx

Amy, i'm glad you like my shop, thank you. You have some very wise words and I actually feel a little brighter now so thank you for that too.

I love the idea of sticking to a limit too Ariana, so that takes some of the anxiety away if I plan ahead for what i'm comfortable spending out.

Thank you again x

Re: Nervous about listing fees

I agree with Ariana. If you think of it like you are going to spend an average of $5 per month, that is 100 listings, that's a lot of listings!! Right now you have 27 listings that means you are spending an average of $1.35 per month to keep them active. If hubby would be upset about that, perhaps it would be better to wait until things are a little more financially stable to start your shop. Once you start getting sales, the shop should pay for itself. I pay all my fees out of my paypal account every Monday and I often have quite a bit left over to deposit to my bank. This week I had $210 to deposit after I paid my fees here and for eBay.

Any business takes investment seed money, so maybe you can sit down and talk to hubby and tell him that your plan is to allocate $60 to the business as start up funds. That will allow you to support 100 listings for 1 year if you don't sell one single item. Once you start selling the items will pay for themselves, then it hopefully shouldn't be an issue. If you tell him this exact number and you stick to it, then you'll probably feel better about getting more items listed which should help your business be able to succeed.

Good luck!
Rachel

I would just work on setting a budget, but yes it takes money to make money.

Re: Nervous about listing fees

It's about $5 to list 25 items, that's about the price of a Starbucks drink. I know it seems like a lot of money, but I think your shop is worth a couple of lattes!

If it makes you feel any better, my Etsy bill is ~$300-$400 a month these days- but I'm paying all the bills with my Etsy shop so it works out.

Make your own coffee this week and list away!

Re: Nervous about listing fees

Yes, that's very true. I guess it seems more because most of my items are under $10.

Joanne, that's amazing that you pay all your bills from your store. Really inspiring!

We are not the most comfortable financially at the moment but If I don't take the risk and spend out for the business, I know I will never get around to doing what I love to do.

Thanks all xx

Re: Nervous about listing fees

Oh absolutely. I was having serious money issues when I first opened my shop 4yrs back. But I set a budget and stuck with it... eventually, things improved and now I don't stress about it. (I actually factor renewal fees into my monthly budget because I renew almost daily.)

Re: Nervous about listing fees

Hi Leanne,

Give it a while. It took me 3 months before I sold anything and now a year and a later I'm over 1,500 sales. You need quite a few listings to have a chance of being found. Best of luck.

Re: Nervous about listing fees

Amy provided great insight into start up costs for your business. I lost money the first two years. Not much, a couple hundred maybe, but that included start up cost of buying supplies and tools, all the fees not only from online but bust craft shows table fees, making mistakes on shipping prices, and the like.

I too sometimes am hesitant about renewing smaller items that didn't sell, but then I remind myself, it's only 20 cents!

This past year I made enough profit to make up for the prior losses. Just gotta get the ball rolling in the beginning!

Re: Nervous about listing fees

It's not as frightening as it used to be. Re-listing your items before they expired used to be a valid marketing method because it pushed your product to the top of the list. (Someone PLEASE correct me if I am wrong)

20 cents to keep it there for a few months without that kind of pressure is a bit easier to swallow.

Hi Leanne,

I believe you to be in Great Britain. A4 is the common paper size there, but in the US the common paper size is 8.5x11. You might want to consider making items in this paper size if you want to catch the US market.

Re: Nervous about listing fees

I worried about this fee at first, too... but at the same time I had my vintage goods in an antique store and was paying $70 a month for a display case and rarely made my fee back, let alone time wasted, gas mileage to refresh goods, etc. I looked at my account and realsied I spent about $30 and made $50! I was shocked because in my meart I was terrified nobody would buy from me! Now I sell about $150 a month, and I'm even expanding my shop- I started a new shop for my postcards & a third for digital papers- I'm positive I can actually make a go of this, and it's worth it to me NOW to invest some of my profits and get creative!

Re: Nervous about listing fees

I am in exactly the same boat! Have not had any sales on etsy, I've now got 56things in my shop. Everyone keeps saying the magic number is 100. I asked for help in another team forum and got some great feedback about tags and titles etc, so I have a list to edit my listings, going to do a bit at a time. The seller hand book is also great for advice. You have to give it time, I know it's scary but it's better to give it a good try, it's hard trying to stand out amongst millions of items!

Keep at it...I am!

Re: Nervous about listing fees

I'm not too worried about listing fees ~ as mentioned, a $20/100 item goal isn't a big deal.

I'm worried about having all that inventory (and where to put it!) :)

It is very hard 'spending a fortune' 20 dollar cents per 4 months at a time.
