Need help creating a new item

I want to add an item for sale. There is no picture for it. I want it to say "Special Offer" or something to that effect. Can anyone tell me how to create it? I see where some sites have a listing as "4 patterns for $10" in just a text format.

How do you do this if I may ask? Is it a text box that is created and made into a jpg?
Thanks for any suggestions. I can sew up a storm, but a computer graphics person I'm not.

Re: Need help creating a new item

My guess is that you would create a jpeg like you said above. It doesn't require much skill at all.

If you don't have a photo editing/ graphics program I suggest GIMP. It a lot like photoshop but it's 100% free. (I'm working on a GIMP for absolute beginners book too. It won't help you right this second but maybe helpful to you in the future. )

Doing all this computer graphics stuff can seen overwhelming at first but once you get into it the results are well worth it. You could make special "reserved" listing photos, "sale" photos and customize a sale banner just by adding text to an image.

If you want more specific instruction on how exactly to do a text image I would be happy to walk you through the process. Just let me know what software you have or get GIMP :)

Re: Need help creating a new item

Dainty, I have Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 that I use for my picture editing. I'm thinking I just need a bit of advice on how to do it. You can convo me directly if you like and we can go from there. I won't be on much tomorrow since I babysit my grandkids so I'll be here for sure on Friday for any suggestions. Thanks

Yes, you just type some text into a text box in your image editor. You can put a background color or use a fancy font or anything like that if you wish.

Do remember that according to Etsy's Terms of Use, every listing must be able to be purchased alone and still have the buyer receive some sort of deliverable item (whether it be delivered by convo, web, email, or physical package, etc.). So if it's just a "buy 4 get 1 free" kind of listing, it's technically against the rules.

Re: Need help creating a new item

Rame,
The listing is for a combination package of items. I've purchased patterns where they are "3 for $10" and I choose the 3 that I want. This is what I want to do where they can choose "4 hats for $__" so they will physically receive items. No problem with the etsy policies.

I'm a bit confused on the "Buy 4 get one Free" thing. I've seen it offered but didn't realize it was against policy. I'm thinking that etsy is getting a bit out of hand and if I feel like giving something away, it's my money to give.

I'm not really happy with the way my site is going and am thinking of giving a go on another site that seems to draw more customers rather than have shop owners buying from each other. Oh I'm on a soapbox now, so off to have another cup of coffee and brainstorm.
