Need advice on titles and tags what works best

Help!

I feel as though I'm just doing my titles and tags all wrong. Would love some advice.

I noticed today that for Google syndication that your titles should be less than 70 characters. Frantically going through and shortening my titles. Anyone have any other good advice here?

Now for tags, I have a question. Is one word on multi-word tags better. For example, say I'm selling a pink hat. Is it better to have a tag for pink and another for hat or to have one tag for pink hat or all three? Any additional help on tagging would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Let's use this hat as an example: http://www.etsy.com/listing/99751020/cosmic-blue-brown-hippie-slouchy-beanie
As a buyer I would not search for a beanie using the words cosmic blue brown hippie - the first three words of your title are the most important and should state exactly what your product is - Blue Beanie Hat Slouchy ... with outside searches such as google, the first 40-50 characters are what count.

Repeat your title in the opening sentence of your description and again 3 times throughout your listing to be picked up on outside searches.

I always list my tags the same as the title - Blue Hat, Blue Beanie, Blue Woman's Hat...multi word tags carry more weight than single words.

It took me a REALLY long time to figure this out, and I would hate to see someone else go through the pain I went through!

For google, yes, 70 characters is what it takes, but that doesn't mean that your title has to be that short. You need to make sure the most important parts of the tag are in the FIRST part of the title. For example, for your pink hat, the first word needs to be hat and if you want to put beanie or other words for hats, they go at the beginning too. Then you describe what kind of hat...etc.

For the tags, single word tags are not what they are looking for. The tags should be phrases that your buyers would put into the search to find your kind of item. So, for your pink hat, it would be "pink hat", "pink beanie", "crochet hat", etc.

Hope this helps!
