Naming items

when you add a new item to your shop, do you just name it with what it is or do you come up with a name for it. I have found a few people who have named their items but I would think that would make it hard to find what they are selling.

i keep my titles with what the item is but I was wondering if anyone actually comes up with a name for their items

Thanks

Re: Naming items

Hi Devon - that is a strange question. If you mean they, for example, name their crochet hat "Miss Mary's purple favorite", they'll never be found. Buyers don't search by cutesy or clever, they search by what they are looking for:
Purple womens crochet hat white flowers winter. So, yes, title your items by what they are IMHO. :)

Re: Naming items

I name mine exactly what they are called otherwise as mentioned above it will never be found. I noticed the ones that do are pretty "big" time Etsy shops who already have a large following.

Re: Naming items

I occasionally name items but the name is the last phrase in the title and description. I don't take up precious keyword real estate with creative names.

Re: Naming items

Name it what it is, that way you will be found.

Re: Naming items

Titles need to say what it is first. I have a couple of things that I've 'named', the name appears at the end of the title and/or in the description.

Re: Naming items

I agree that you need to name it what it is in order to be found. I changed all my titles and now I have noticed that found by search is always first.

Re: Naming items

I used to come up with inventive names but I found that it does make it hard for people to find them via search. Now I name them what they look like or features that they have to make it a bit easier.

Re: Naming items

I name my items exactly what they are. I like the idea of using unique names, but unfortunately, that wouldn't work very well with the search engine.

Re: Naming items

Etsy says to come up with a nice title, like you would see in a store and I did a quick search in the search bar and got over 100 items with "Lovely" in the title.

Re: Naming items

Well think about it your looking for a cool new necklace in the back of your head you got something like that in your mind
What words would you use to find it??

Personally I dont start searches with adjectives like lovely pretty prudy beautiful... Something like that Id look for the stones I want and the shape I want.

If your getting mad hits off lovely necklace please ignore me just my opinion

Re: Naming items

you wont show up for lovely necklace on the first page if you don't use it as a tag.

11,000 results for that term

only 10 have it in their title and the tags.

do that, and you will be 11.

search terms with those words in both tags and titles are shown first.

write that down.

apply that to every important keyword in every listing and your views will go up.

a lot.

Re: Naming items

I name all my items, but always put the name at the end of the title and not at the expense of keywords. I don't put the name in the description nor in my tags, as the name is just a bit of fancy icing on the cake.

Re: Naming items

Like others, I do both. I put what it is in the title then what I named the item in the description. I name most my items a women's name. My frilly scarf is Paige as it makes me think of my friend Paige, etc.

Re: Naming items

There are times when I have a specific theme in mind for my items so I name them after that. And there are times when I don't have a certain theme so I have to make up a name :)

Re: Naming items

I title my photographs and I'll be naming the items in my clothing line, but I rarely include the titles in the actual listing title. It's just a note in the description. In the title, I describe the item the way (I think) it would be searched for.
