NAICS CODE - HELP PLEASE

I am trying to get a sales and use tax permit. I went online and before I fill out the request for a permit, they request a NAICS Code number. So, OK; I checked and found out that businesses are divided by sections. Industry, Food, , retail, wholesale. Now I am more confused. I am making and trying to sell jewelry, but I also would like to make, and sell other items such as knitted items, beads, porcelain dolls, and so forth.

Does anybody have any experience regarding NAICS. Is there a general code that would cover all of the above? Please help.

Re: NAICS CODE - HELP PLEASE

pick the one that is closest to what you expect to do/ sell :)

If they are VASTLY different, e.g. knitting vs. selling food, you may have to get a different type of permit -- in that case, I'd call your Secretary of State directly.

Re: NAICS CODE - HELP PLEASE

I don't know if this will help or not but my sales and use tax permit just says retail for my jewelry shop and my quilt and fabric shop. It doesn't say anything about jewelry, quilts, fabric, knit items, etc.

Re: NAICS CODE - HELP PLEASE

And for some instances you can have several NAICS codes, especially if your business varies. My day job deals with government procurements, and I look vendors up in CCR.GOV, by their DUNS numbers. Many use more than one NAICS code, which can actually help them get more business, especially say if they provide gravel (minerals and aggregate), but they also haul the gravel (transportation), for example.

If your tax form only lets you use one code, pick the closest, but if you can provides more than one, it won't hurt!

Re: NAICS CODE - HELP PLEASE

Thanks for your response, everybody. Just to close the circle and for future reference, I am posting my results.

I was going crazy, because truly, their NAICS directory shows so many choices and none of them fully applied to what I was looking for. As CopperLeafStudios suggested, I called the Secretary of State. I told them I wanted to sell jewelry and other various items mainly on the internet. However, I also wanted to sell directly to the public in my area and to a couple of boutiques, if the opportunity would arise. The agent told me to use Code 454111 - Store retailing or a combination of store retailing and Internet retailing in the same establishment, classified in Sector 44-45--Retail Trade. I insisted that I wanted to sell directly to the public in my area and to a couple of boutiques (no Internet involved). She assured me that was fine. So I already filled out an application on line and made a copy to sign and forward to them by mail or by fax. I should have my permit within three weeks.
