Hi, I just opened a shop and I'd like to start a blog but have never done one before. May I have some links to yours for examples to get an idea of what its about?

And should I have my own domain name or is there a better place to start one?

You can start one for free on wordpress.com or blogger.com.

Mine is self hosted on my own domain: http://www.hopestarbound.com/blog/
but it uses wordpress.

You can always start with a free blog and then import it to your own domain when you get the money/time.

I personally love tumblr, it's free and easy to use, and if you want to later you can set it with a custom domain. I use squarespace for my personal blog/portfolio and it works really well. I've tried wordpress and blogspot and both of them were too complicated/clunky/dated for my tastes.

I've been using blogger.com for almost two years now!I'ts very user friendly considering i had no idea before about html and stuff! I do love typepad though, but I think you have to pay for the non-plain version of it.

I self host mine and my server uses wordpress as the background. It's very easy to set up your own domain and install the blog software. I use www.dreamhost.com to host my site and blog and there is a button when you log in to set up the blog stuff, then you just log in through the address they give you once it's installed to do posts and stuff. Very easy.

It will take time to get an audience and regular views - so be patient and make regular posts (I find 2-3 posts a week easier than daily!) and stick with it for at least 2 years!

I use wordpress on my own hosted space. I tried it on the free space but found it quite limiting for images and such. I LOVE Wordpress :D Its sooo easy and there are tons of free templates around.

Be sure not to talk solely about your shop. Blogs like this don't get followers because the posts are predictable and dull. Be sure to post frequently, too. Posting three times a month doesn't do much for traffic, since Google loves new content. Blogging 3 times a week is what most successful blogs do.

Also, blogger is better than wordpress because customisation is a LOT simpler, is completely free, and covers every aspect of the blog. There are also more blog designers out there who are familiar with blogger than wordpress.
