Mannequin head?

I was told in an earlier post that some people may not want to purchase a hat the they see someone wearing in a picture. The only solution for this is to buy a mannequin head to display them, but they are a bit pricey. I wouldn't be able to make an investment like that until I have made a few sales.

I'm not sure what to do about this in the meantime. Would you buy a hat that the creator tried on for photos?

Re: Mannequin head?

I wouldn't mind it, but I do have a couple of friends who wouldn't go near a hat that someone else had on their head. I think it just depends on the person :)

Re: Mannequin head?

You can get the foam heads online or at the beauty supply store for under $10. I personally don't mind if it's on a real head, but it is nice I suppose if you have one pic of the item on the head to show it's a new item and not something worn already. I mean, we were all taught growing up never to wear someone's hat. I'd just work to getting a foam head or something, and meanwhile keep going as you are, maybe you'll luck out and find one of the nice wood hat displays.

Re: Mannequin head?

I have considered the foam head, but I worry I don't think they look good in photographs. I worry that it would hurt more than it would help.

Re: Mannequin head?

I actually like the foam heads better. I don't like looking at that mannequin make-up face, gets kind of weird sometimes.

Re: Mannequin head?

If you don't have a mannequin head, take a picture of the hat on a solid background and PhotoShop the mannequin head in . . .

Re: Mannequin head?

I agree Jenni!
In addition to potentially being a little creepy, depending on the mannequin, it can throw off the style you were looking to achieve. I think the foam heads are cleaner looking and less distracting from the beautiful hat being showcased

(and you can pop the contrast up a bit in a photo editing program to make it look less like foam and more smooth!)

Re: Mannequin head?

see this listing. the photo is a bit close for what i really like, but you get the point. you see the hat, it does pop. you can also see the shape of it since its on the head.

Re: Mannequin head?

What I did when I first started selling is I asked some local hair dressers they used them in school and didn't need them anymore....maybe you could find one that way.

Re: Mannequin head?

I sell a lot of hats. You can look at my shop as I do several different kinds of displays, foam heads, mannequins, dolls, & real people. :) Enough to server everyone's tastes.
You can put a statement in your listing that says "Hat purchased is not the one being modeled and has never been worn" Then you can just give away or sell to friends and family the ones modeled by humans.
I've personally never had anyone tell me they wont purchase one of my modeled hats but if they werre concerned I would make them a new one.

Re: Mannequin head?

My hat section is currently closed while I have new pictures taken, but I agree, I prefer the foam head to the creepy mannequin head. They're worse than clowns with those vacant staring eyes.

As others have said, if you do the white head on a white background, then smooth it, you'll be fine, we were just discussing the mannequin in another forum and the general opinion is, they're creepy.

Re: Mannequin head?

Yikes! Maybe I need to start writing down patterns as I make things then? I freehand almost everything, and use a wide variety of different yarns. Everything is pretty unique.

Re: Mannequin head?

Felicia, that is probably a good idea because you will drive yourself crazy trying to recreate something that you made several months prior. I was like that in the beginning so I decided to narrow down my hats to a select few popular styles so I wasn't always having to make a new design in a different color or size or each customer. :)

Re: Mannequin head?

I feel like if you find the right mannequin and the right wig to go with it, it can look pretty nice. I have gotten a lot better response from both family/friends and other customers since my mannequin got her new hair. ;)

I personally wouldn't mind buying a hat that was modeled on someone's head as long as the person looked well groomed. But I felt for me, since all of my items are ready to ship, that I would model them on a mannequin just in case it bothered a potential customer having it on a real person.

Re: Mannequin head?

I grew my own model....my daughter! Personally, I like pics with hats on people, you can see exactly where it would be on your ears, etc. I looked into mannequin heads, and all I could find nearby is styrofoam, and they were not quite life size, it would have made my hats look huge! I am sticking with my gorgeous daughter :)

Re: Mannequin head?

Nadine - too funny, growing your own model! That's a pretty complicated thing, though :-)

OP- you look well groomed and that would be a HUGE factor in buying a hat that was plunked on somebody's head. Considering the alternative is the local Wal-Mart & who knows whose head was last in the hat... well, I'll take yours! I like the idea of asking a hairdresser if they have any old heads; you could also ask at a wig shop if they have heads that they need to get rid of; a weave shop might, also, but they may be an ethnic face, which might be a good idea to use for some of your pictures :-)

The foam head you could decupouge, paint or somesuch to give the head a less cheap look if that's what your worried about. Use old music sheets, dried flowers, green leaves, the possibilities are endless really. Or, you might be able to invest in a small rosemarry topiary; in my area they run about $15-45 depending on size (this is also because Rosemary must be in a greenhouse over winter, where I live it's an annual, in Tennessee it should be less $ simply because it doesn't need to be heated all winter to stay alive :-) Cheaper methods would be an ivy styled over a topiary ball, an evergreen pruned to topiary shapes, the list is endless. The green would bring in a bit of the natural element without distracting a viewer (I think!)

Re: Mannequin head?

I really wouldn't buy a hat that was on a stranger's head to be honest. You can get a mannequin head for less than 40 dollars, shipped....I got mine from Roxy Display. Although I got one on Amazon, I got the other on the actual website - they have a lot of options. If you google "Roxy Display" you'll find them. Also, if you pose the mannequin in profile...the "creepy eyes" thing is not that bad!

Re: Mannequin head?

Ive got a couple of the foam heads arriving any tick of the clock now. I prefer their clean look. The focus then becomes the hat.

Re: Mannequin head?

I didn't have the money to buy real mannequin heads when I started so I bought 2 styrofoam heads somewhere online for like 4$ each.

The wig I use is actually a Zombie Queen costume wig I had ordered for last Halloween ... Saddly, it arrived a few days after Halloween, so I never got to use it myself. Now the zombie wig + one head = Lizzie, my trusty hat model. totally love her!! :P
