Magic number?

they say when you hit 100 listings you start to sell and I do believe that but does anyone thing there is another magic number? I do sell sellers with quite few sales with 30 and 50 items though.

Re: Magic number?

I've never seen anything magical happen when a shop hits a certain number of listings.

I've seen many shops that have only a couple of pages of listings that are extremely busy and other shops that have hundreds of listings that rarely sell anything.

Its not always about the number of listings but how easily your target customer can find what you have to offer and how much marketing you do.

Re: Magic number?

There is no "magic" number. Having more items can help to generate sales, as you have more chances of getting found in SEO/relevancy searches. Having a great product, great photograpy & great keywords are far more important.

Re: Magic number?

That hasn't been true for me unfortunately :( I have had over 350 views, 94 favourites and no sales - I know that my product isn't an everyday item, but I am not sure what I am doing wrong?

The more items the better, don't stop at 100.

Re: Magic number?

I, like crochetgal, believe there is no magic number.
Case in point if you were building log-pole pine queen sized bed frames. You only need one listing because you build to order or they built to spec.

Many shops have two - four pages of listings and are slammed all the time.
It's your descriptions, tags, and title that get your noticed not the number of items in your shop. However, each time you list a new item Google finds you again.

Work on making and building perfect items, developing your customer service and perfecting the seo.

Re: Magic number?

It seems to have helped a little bit ... to be honest for me it's been more of a magic season than number.

Re: Magic number?

... most of my sales have been in the fall.

Even though my views have increased by more than half, my sales haven't.

Re: Magic number?

Well I hit 50 and had 2 sales the same day, that could be sheer coincidence though. I do aim to add more items and I have started a Facebook page and I use tumbler. I think that the number of items is important because it shows that your always adding new items keeping up with your shop pretty much it shows that your active. I also know that adding items is not enough, you should use social media to promote outside of Etsy as well.

Re: Magic number?

There is definitely no magic number! It's about having great products, great descriptions, perfect pricing, and the most effective tags you could possibly have at that moment.

If you aren't getting views (I've heard 'ok' views is 1 view for every 2 items you have listed, 'decent' is 1 view for every item in the shop, and so on) - then check your tags and titles.

If you are getting good views but not sales, then check your photos and descriptions. If you get good reviews on those (get some critiques) - then finally re-evaluate your pricing.

Obviously having more items in the shop helps because you have more opportunities to be found. But if your tags suck, you still will never be found no matter how many items you have! Forget magic numbers, focus on what actually matters!

Re: Magic number?

Agree - it's more of a magic season for us - rather than a number. I also believe that tags and titles make a huge difference. When I really put some time and effort into figuring out this, I saw a great results! One of the biggest challenges is trying to vary the titles and descriptions - not just copying and pasting.

A little constructive critique: For example, your wire card holders - you should have wedding in the first few words of your title and description. Your description seems to ramble on and on - kind of in a circle. Try cutting out the mish mash. You shouldn't have to announce that you've staged them with photos to see them in action. See kind of what I mean?

Re: Magic number?

I think that the more items you have in your shop the more you show up in search results... for me when I hit about 100 items in my shop I noticed orders go up dramatically.

Re: Magic number?

I have not focused on how many items I have in my shop. Being new I am just entering them as fast as I can.
So far I have had 2 sales, in less than a month.

I just check I have 103 listing this morning.

Re: Magic number?

I do pretty good when I have at least 50 listings.

My personal goal right now is to reach 100 items, including multiples; that will be another 10-15 listings, I think.

Re: Magic number?

There realistically isn't a magic number. I think people recommend 50-100 items to provide buyers with variety, encourage more multiple purchases, buying more than one item etc. It can also help increase your chances of being found in search especially if that particular market is very saturated. I prefer flicking through at least 3 or 4 pages in shops rather than just the one but it won't prevent me purchasing

Re: Magic number?

Everyone has given lots of good advice, but here's a thought ---

why not search for "magic product", rather than magic # of listings? Case in point: my 1st Etsy shop (now closed by me) had lots of listings & ok pics & descriptions. I went one year with one sale! I closed it, and opened another shop, but only after having done a lot of market reasearch on what people were buying, within the area of my skills. My 2nd and then 3rd shops were opened, and, while I'm still learning, I'm doing much, much better.

What changed most? My product.
