Listing freshness

I used shoptimizer on my shop, and one of the thing it says is that Etsy's search results are based on relevance and freshness.

Here is the text:

Etsy's search results are based on relevance and freshness. The more you update your listings, the more likely they are to be shown higher in Etsy search results. If you've updated more than 50% of your listings in the last month, you'll get an “A”. Less than that and you'll need to update your listings to improve your grade.

So, what is freshness? Is it just changing the text in your listing, or is it renewing a listing.

I have had several cases where I get an order shortly after renewing a sold listing, so it seems that renewing helps.

Re: Listing freshness

Etsy's search is based on relevance of keywords, however newer listings can come out on top if all other factors are the same. So if there are 10 listings that have the same relevance, the newest listings will be first.

So that would be a good reason to renew listings IF you are in a highly competitive field with hundreds of new listings daily. If not, I don't think renewing all the time will make a big difference.

This is different from Google's new Fresh algorithm which is based on fresh content. This algorithm looks for new content, not just a word or two here and there, but completely new. So that would be a good reason to list new items on a regular basis.

Re: Listing freshness

Ah well that explains the higher views for me because I have been revising items and adding new ones the past few days.

Re: Listing freshness

Thanks, that explains what's going on.

I relisted a sold item last night, and had a favorite on it in a few minutes.

Re: Listing freshness

So, we need to relist?? I had decided it was a waste of money to keep relisting. It adds up.

Re: Listing freshness

Thelma, it depends on your niche. If you do not have a lot of competition, then no, it would not make sense to do a lot of relisting. If your items generally end up on the first page of a search, there is no reason to.

But some people in very crowded fields such as jewelry might benefit by that extra boost. It all depends. You have to see what works for your shop.
