Japanese characters

HI,
I would love Etsy to post it in the "how to start as a buyer" from Japan, to use the english version of their shipping address, otherwise can't ship their order. (the post office have to enter the international addresses as of last week (again).
Thank you so much!
Love you all!

Gabe/1AEON

ps.: I do love the Japanese characters better, but I can't read it:)

Re: Japanese characters

I posted it in the International team's forum too, but might get more attention here and eventually could be fixed faster:)

Re: Japanese characters

My understanding is you can ship with their native characters but just add "Japan" at the bottom of the address
the postal service should be able to get it to Japan and then their local service should deliver to the correct address written in Japanese.
hope this helps

Re: Japanese characters

Alternatively, if USPS need the address in English characters, just send your customer a message/email asking for the address in English & not in Kanji.

Re: Japanese characters

yes, they need to enter the address here at the post office, so they need to send it in US English, I know..

Re: Japanese characters

I had this issue last week.

Etsy suggests that we contact the seller to tell us their address using the Latin alphabet (no characters btw) - I find this totally un acceptable, so I proposed that when users from Japan, Israel, Russia, Greece (to name some) sign up to Etsy, they are prompted to also include their details in the most common version (Latin).
Of course - no response whatsoever from Etsy on this.

So, I went to google and translated the address. The envelope was in Japanese, the custom order was English.
Do I know if the address was translated correctly? no way, but all I know is that as soon it gets to Japan, they will understand the where it needs to go.

The postal service only needs the City or Town in English (assuming we are talking about shipping form the USA), so they know were to send it from let's say NY in the US to TOKYO in Japan.
Once is there I am sure no body reads the English version anyway.

The bottom line is that Etsy should / needs to come up with a better solution other than sellers having to chase customers to translate their address.

My two cents

Re: Japanese characters

I've used google translate to translate the address and then taken that translation and double checked it with google maps.

Re: Japanese characters

It happened to me quite a few times, could be counted with more than a hand (5 fingers). I know once the package gets into the country destination, they'll know what to do. But what if... I wrote the wrong thing. And it goes to a different place still within the country, a gal could hope.

So I just copy and paste (on Microsoft Works, I guess). Print it out, cut the label, and then slap it to the package. Carefully write the address to the custom form. With meticulous detail which takes me more manpower than the other orders. I should charge more for international shipment come to think about it. And then, praying the power higher than my limited mind to take care from there.

No one complains of missing order so far.
